Anyone using ink optimization in their worklflow?

Gordo, For the past year, year and a half, we are processing files (vector or bitmap) through a device link workflow, applying the GRACOL2006 ICC profile with either medium or heavy GCR settings depending on the job and when not restricted by the customer. There has been a significant...

    What is Print

I've had this argument by press operators when we were working to set ourselves up to printing standards. There were complaints that you cannot put numbers in printing, as it is 'art', which is a ridiculous thing to say when you work within the walls of a factory and you have to punch in a card...

What's happening with G7 Master printers

I can confirm that: Lack of notification was the reason we did not re-qualify in time. After we missed the first re-qualification deadline it became complicated to figure out what happened 6 months ago when the re-qualification expired. It becomes even more complicated because there is a network...

    Symphony Calibrator

Double-clicking the saved symphony file would not work. You got to open Symphony first, then select the file you want from the Sypmhony's open menu, and then open it. But to answer your question: the reason this happens is because they have not fixed the bugs in this application, probably...

    a* b* of black ink

Thanks all, I got the 1997 edition of the standard, and unless the 2006 edition is different, the chromatic tolerances for black are a*: -0.7 to 2.2 and b*: -3.56 to 2.44. It is well known that these are wide tolerances, and according to them the ink that we are currently using is in...

    a* b* of black ink

Is anyone using/selling any blacks that have an a* and b* value of 0.00 at a 100% dot area, as specified by 12647-2 (sheetfed)?

    Fingerprinting Suggestions

Assuming that the same ink film is applied across the cylinder, isn't the whole difference in this discussion that the color bar has no GCR in it?

    Fingerprinting Suggestions

I'm not trying to complicate the argument, rather un-complicate it. I do not know of any press operators measuring mils on press. Does anyone? They care about IFT in a mechanical sense, and they look/hear at the plates and rollers, or use gauges to measure it, but when it comes to adjusting the...

    Fingerprinting Suggestions

I fail to see any argument anymore in using density or LAB, or XYZ, or of the value of grey balance. If you have spectral data, you can convert to either. Density doesn't relate to appearance. LAB relates to appearance. If press operators want density, spectral data can be converted to density...

    Fingerprinting Suggestions

What paper types do you refer to? There are lots used in packaging. You do not really care about your stock itself, but you care about the expected color of your solids and overprints on that stock if you want to hit GRACOL/ISO values. I say you do not care about the color of your stock itself...

    Low VOCs and metallics

Hello all, I was wondering if anyone is aware of a solvent solution for UV metallics. We are currently using E-Cure 5.0 and it is doing a fairly good job in washing off our UV metallic inks, but in the months to come, in California where we are located, we won't be able to use that product. I...

Cp/Cpk and Statistical process control for offset

Hello all, I was wondering if anyone has Statistical Process Control practices in place at your facility. More specific, I was wondering if anyone has calculated the Cp and Cpk metrics for density and/or dot gain from different production runs, over different presses and different stocks. In...

    Standard ink densities?

It has been useful with monitoring spot colors at different locations throughout the sheet. Being able to have a DE reading on the monitors have helped the operators catch non-conformities. Just an extra set of eyes to make sure we do not ship non-conforming color. I do not know about investing...

    Standard ink densities?

I completely agree with you. It is actually very frustrating... These are measuring technologies, not related with the ink unit design, and as such they cannot correct its inherent flaws, just measure it. I guess we have to simplify our designs and say to our customers we cannot do multiple ups ;)

D50/2deg vs D65/2deg vs 5k Viewing Booth conditions

Eric, You'll get metamerism for sure if you are visually inspecting color under D50 and your customer is inspecting it under D65. Not for all colors, but for a whole bunch of them. I think that there are some light booths that have both light sources available. I would question the use of 1:1...

Little help for an operator kept in the dark

Being G7 certified doesn't mean that all the presses are achieving the same output. You got to calibrate each press. There are two ways to go about it. You can either measure LAB of solids and overprints and dot gain of both presses and adjust the plate curves of the latest press to match the...

    why L a b? why not L u v , L c h

Very interesting topic! The difference is traced back to the development of color science models. CIELUV scales its coordinates subtractively, and I think it was the first model that tried to move up from the chromaticity coordinates. CIELAB scales it's coordinates proportionately, or through...

Spectrolino rev A - in need of a UV filter solution...

This is a very good discussion, but why not just get an i1-iO for less than $3000? Just a thought. No need to invest in a discontinued product. I was working with that spectrolino and measuring a target took me at least 45 minutes. I could not complete a full optimization in a single day...
