Open-source SVG-based data merge engine (Inkscape). Looking for VDP/prepress feedback

Having the option to output the file(s) with or without the static background would be a feature that’s needed. Most rips will process files better when using the build in VDP option of creating a static page and then sending the variable data separately. For me, your speeds of 20,000 records...

    Paper woes and Canon

I was told this same thing by my Xerox dealer several years ago. I sent them information that “HP Indigo Certified” does not mean that the paper is specifically coated to run on HP Indigo, it means that the paper has been tested and evaluated to meet the standards of the Indigo. Some paper is...

Open-source SVG-based data merge engine (Inkscape). Looking for VDP/prepress feedback

My opinion would be that splitting up large files should be up to the user to decide whether it’s necessary and if necessary, into how many files. Different digital presses and rip combinations will most likely determine what size files don’t slow down production, thus the reason why users need...

Open-source SVG-based data merge engine (Inkscape). Looking for VDP/prepress feedback

Breaking a large data file up would be an extra step no one wants to take. The batch process should be an option in the vdp software. Option 1 within vdp software - single file output Option 2 within vdp software - Multifile Output, then under option 2 another option for records per file Speed...

    4Over quantities

I don't use 4Over for much anymore but I did login and didn't see any restriction to 500 pieces. That was on 100lb text 4/4 and 14pt 4/4 with uv. Their customer service has never been helpful for me.

    Any cloud storage users?

It won't be long before Anthropic's Claude Mythos will be able to penetrate even a tin foil hat while you're off grid. It's abilities are very concerning for anything connected to the internet. An offline backup solution for jobs is not really an option, it's a necessity. From Anthropic's own...

    Any cloud storage users?

This is exactly what I do. Storage is cheap and I always have multiple copies at my disposal if needed.

Want to upgrade from Xerox Versant 180, recommendations please

Take a look at the speeds for coated and heavy stock on the ApeosPro, it's significantly slower than what you have now with the Versant.

Want to upgrade from Xerox Versant 180, recommendations please

Very interesting, I'll have to point this out to my tech. That would be a game changer for me if I wanted to upgrade.

Want to upgrade from Xerox Versant 180, recommendations please

Yes, the PX300 still has the BTR. I don't have issues with color variations or registration on my 280 like others have had though.

Want to upgrade from Xerox Versant 180, recommendations please

The Proficio PX300 would be the replacement for the Versant 280, the Proficio PX500 would be the next level up and you would be correct, it would be overkill for your volume. From a design perspective, it looks as though the PX500 may solve the 2nd BTR problem since it’s now a belt instead of...

Does anyone still use Franklin Estimating?

I use this version, I don't even need to plug it in to work.

Xerox Versant vs Konica Minolta vs Silk Papers

I think any other brand will run coated paper better than the Versant line. The 2nd BTR problem is unique to Xerox along with the short drum life. Be sure to keep the suction filter clean or replace it often, if not, heat will build up faster and shorten the life of the BTR even quicker.

    Price Increases and Customer Outrage...

I had one of those customers years ago and I was a bit nervous when I said I won't go down in price, it was already a low price. Best thing I ever did, the work I lost let me do more profitable work and less of a pain at the same time. I raise my prices several time a year now, in small increments.

    Ricoh IM C6500 Opinions

It looks like the IM C6500 has higher resolution along with going up to 13x19. I'll have to get my hands on some output to see if it would be acceptable for what I want it to do. I could just keep my Versant 280 but it's overkill for the low volume I'd be putting on it.

    Ricoh IM C6500 Opinions

I plan to retire for the most part, keeping some select customers and working with several other local printers and then the normal gang run guys. I would like the ability to take care of some smaller jobs, and my volume would be fairly low, 5k-10k 12x18’s. Speed isn’t a huge issue, but image...

    Figma

I have no idea how many people will use AI to create their own design apps but I can tell you that the overwhelming majority of my customers won't be. Most small businesses don't even have someone on staff that know what a bleed is or even care to know what one is. So thinking that they will...

    Figma

Why would a software company charge you $400 for software that could use in perpetuity when they can get away with charging you $25 or even significantly more a month for the same software. Of course, they will tell you that you’ll always have the latest greatest version of this wonderful...

Shopping for a new Digital Press...

It’s not just long coated runs, it’s coated stock in general. I can have a 2nd BTR that’s leaving nasty marks on coated stock and then switch to uncoated stock and the marks are gone. Try running coated stock again and the marks are back. Running only coated stock on a “coated stock only” 2nd...
