One bit: an image composed of pixels that are either black or white (on or off - no actual grays). Called 1-bit (or single-bit) because only one bit of information is required for each pixel. A screened halftone is an example of a one bit image. Also called "bi-level" What PhotoShop calls "Bitmap" mode.

What is there to explain about 1bit images?
It's really simple: you have 1bit to describe a pixel in the image.
1bit only allows 2 different values: 0 and 1.
That means you can either have that pixel "filled" with a "color" or not. To be or not to be. Black or white.

Usually when we talk about 1-bit in printing, we're talking about the actual Ripped plate file. These are always 1-bit because there is no color (or gray) involved. Ink on paper is always 1-bit, either the ink is there or it isn't.
