appletalk communication

I have an agfa avantra44 imagesetter processor and a computer RIP which only seem to communicate using appletalk to my old MAC os 10.2.8 via network with no problems at all, I just purchased a new IMAC which is using 10.6 to replace the old Mac computer. After hours of trying to get it to communicate with no luck, I found out that the new IMAC doesn't support appletalk no more! Now my question is can I downgrade my new IMAC to 10.5? so that it can support appletalk? IF so do I have to buy a 10.5 OS copy?

Help!

Thanks

Yes you can downgrade it to 10.5. I had to do that here. I bought Apple Care for my new iMac and a call to them with an explanation that this new iMac was worthless to me as is, got me a copy of 10.5.8 for nothing. If you didn't buy Apple care I don't know if they will do it, but call them and see.

Thanks, I think downgrading is going to be my only option, as I don't want to spend $5000 on a new rip because apple decides to remove appletalk!

Yes, Agfa Running windows 2000 it also using taipan 1.0 for ripping software

Update: I now am able to see the RIP from my Mac 10.6 and I can see the shared folders that I created on the computer with a few test files.. But, what I dont see is the shared printer (Avantra44) Hmmmmm any idea?

I just ordered from Apple version 10.5 So, if I cant figure this out im going to have to downgrade and use appletalk grrrrr

Sure? Is it an Agfa RIP?

And if it is an Agfa RIp, which type and which version ?

Taipan 1.0 never worked good at W2K, but WinNT
You have to know exactly what to change in registry and any upgrade could corrupt some data in Machine/AGFA registry.

You don't need AppleTalk. Use named pipe input at the Taipan, create a windows printer and share it (perhaps you already have), and connect to that printer using the Printer Setup Utility -> Add -> Printer Browser -> More Printers... -> Windows Printing in the drop-down menu (instead of AppleTalk or others).

If that doesn't work, check permissions at the Windows box and make sure you are authorized. Other than that, it should work fine. Let AppleTalk die.

Thats exactly! how I currently have it running of the win 2k machine, using a name pipe
config on the 2k machine it shows avantra44 in the printers with the little hand underneath it which indicates that its being shared.
Now on the Mac when I go to add the printer, I select windows, and it does show my win 2k rip but shows no printer being available but I know its being shared on the 2k machine!
I would love to keep 10.6! William do you have msn messanger? or AIM

Taipan... aïe! sorry, I only know Vipers (1.9 and 3) and Apogee 2... and I don't know the equivalence between Taipan and Viper versions...

... but if your Taipan is a level 3 RIP, you perhaps have a TCP/IP connection/broadcasting option?

(and perhaps that in the future somebody will create an AppleTalk extension for Mac OS 10.6???)

Thanks!, I will try your suggestions, As your correct about the appletalk for printer and TCP/IP for the file sharing..

To fix this issue, you have 4 ways:
- image all your jobs by dropping .PS (or PDF) files in the Hot-Folders of the RIP,
using your (TCP/IP) network,
- turn on the TCP/IP broadcasting on the RIP if possible,
- upgrade the RIP if the TCP/IP broadcasting is not possible,
- downgrade the Mac under 10.5 if possible,

...and remember: Taipan up to v. 2.0 - PS Level 2!
Taipan 3.1 - is a "father" of Apogee PDF RIP PS Level3 and really level 3!

No messenger here, but I have a fast e-mail loop that is nearly as quick. [email protected]. Perhaps your mail server isn't as quick. It's that or Facebook chat. But really, it's best to exchange here. Think of it this way -- say someone else has the same problem. They might find this conversation and solve their problem. Public conversation has value.

Back to the topic...

Are these two computers on the same segment of the network? (start with the obvious). I've seen it before -- being in the same room is not equal to the same network.

When things are working right, at the Mac, past "other printers" and with windows printing selected, you should see a network work group listed. The default is 'workgroup', but anything could be listed, depending on who set up your network. When it works, you select the workgroup the rip is in, then select the computer the rip is running on, then you should see the shared printer, available for selection.

Let me know if you can get this far or not, and we'll go from there.

Hi Vlad
You say that Taipan 3 is level 3, so, it's like Viper 3!... does the Taipan family's versions "follow" exactly the Viper family?

The 5th way of seeing the appletalk printer in 10.6

The 5th way of seeing the appletalk printer in 10.6

According to Apple, you can use one of your 10.5 machines as a print server where you share the appletalk printer to your non appletalk macs.

For some customer you can create shared socket input channels if you are going to print from Mac OS 10.6 or later (which does not include Appletalk). There are instructions for this on the following page:

RTI Harlequin RIP Technical Support - RTI Harlequin RIP Software Support

Direct link to video tutorial: http://rti-rips.com/VideoTutorials/Macintosh10.4-10.5Socket-output/Macintosh10.4Socket.html

This may work for Viper or other OS X printers, RIPs and Workflows. Just share the printers for your other computers to view.

If you could upgrade your RIP machine to 10.4 or 10.5 (probably 10.4 because of the age of the software), you could just share the printers as listed above. I checked neither 10.2 or 10.3 have this ability as far as I can tell. You may want to find out if your RIP would run on 10.4.

Check out the following video if you are using a Harlequin RIP. Did not see whether you were using a Harlequin RIP or another type of RIP. Either way you can create a shared Windows printer that your Macs will be able to see (including 10.2 through 10.6).
