Backing up 1-Bit tif info

When archiving ApogeeX files, where do you draw the line as to what you archive? We save the Job Ticket and all files associated with it (template, pdf, etc.) The only thing we don't archive is the 1 bit tiff info from our printdrive. Our logic is that it's to big to archive that and if we have to reprint a job, it only takes a couple of minutes to resubmit a job through the rip to retrap, etc. We find that this trade-off works best for us. Who here backs up their 1 bit tif info and why?

Re: Backing up 1-Bit tif info

At my previous employer (Commercial printer) we only backed up our PrintDrive data for reprints since we had DQS and did mostly reprints.
At my current employer (a Newspaper) we archive only Apogee plans and data. Since it depends on which you do the most of you will want to use the solution that covers your bases best. Reprints without changes (with DQS you can restrip a job with a new master template without re processing it) you would archive printdrive, with changes you would archive Apogee plans and data. Hope this helps.

We drive our Screen 8600Z with postscript generated 1 bits housed on a 6TB RAID (5+1). We never want to RIP a standing job again and do about 50% reprints. On subsequent reprints, we simply merge a new job number onto the darkest ink plate (usually K). The tifs are compressed (G4) so they don't take up that much room. We estimated the size of the RAID based on our promise to keep jobs for a stated period of time. If longer, then the client pays to re-rip, re-proof and re-approve. In this way, we can replate any job in a few minutes, this of course based on the resolution and output device (ours is at 22 plates per hour). The RAID is essentially also our archive. Disaster scenario could mean re-ripping etc but the RAID is pretty secure. We keep extra TB HD's that match the RAID ones so versioning of the drives is no problem. The RAIDs and HDs are dirt cheap now.

We archive our Apogee jobs and our PrintDrive data separately. Our logic is an exact reprint is no longer an exact reprint if it is re-ripped. We enjoy being able to pull a job from tape back into PrintDrive and immediately go to plates.

We use an AIT-2 tape drive to archive the data. Prices on drives and tapes are actually quite reasonable.
