Are Prepress people supposed to interact with the client?

I'm thinking that should be the job of either the CSR or the Salesperson.

CSR or Salesperson to Prepress: "Any probs with Joe's File?"
Prepress person: "Nope. Ran smooth as Skippy Peanut Butter."
CSR or Salesperson: "Great! Thanks! I'll let him know."

Depends on the size of the shop and the purpose of the discussion. At a small shop I worked at early in my career, I would answer the door, the phone, and communicate with clients as a pre-press person...heck, even run the digital presses. At a larger shop I was at, the pre-press people rarely interacted directly with a client unless it's to talk with their designer and explain how to properly send over the file(s).

In a medium-sized shop, we did both prepress and graphic design...so we would email the proofs directly to the client and talk to them on the phone about their requested changes.

But to your point, in a perfect world, only the CSR or salesperson should interact with the clients. This allows for the best voice of the business (some pre-press guys I've worked with had very poor people skills) and it allows the prepress team to work most efficiently, without interruption.

You're assuming that the fellow speaking to the customer isn't a CSR. Some workflows let CSRs see a job's progress through the system.
I purposely made it ambiguous since some shops have CSRs while others don't and so prepress needs to take on that role.

Sometimes even large print providers have some fall between the cracks due to lack of staff, network glitches when the network provider goes offline and so on. It happens apoligize and move on to check his job status a normal person will work with you but Man hope the customer is not a Lib. It could look like this
