Calibrating Fiery AND Printer?????

Watching the Fiery University videos on Color Profiler Suite, they keep mentioning that you need to have both your RIP and your printer calibrated before profiling. I have always just used the calibration in Command Workstation, is there a printer calibration that I should also be doing? It doesn't seem like you would need to do this twice and the way the tech explained it to me you only need to calibrate with the 34 patches from Command Workstation using the ES-2000.

Thanks in advance.

Every morning and sometimes throughout the day we run a process we call "SAC" (as in a Sack of potatoes)

S.hading Correction (on the machine using my es1000)
A.uto Gradation (on the machine)
C.alibration (done using the 34 random patches from the rip with my es1000)

Shading Correction is a combination of a page printed from the printer and then read by the es1000 and the values are forwarded back to the printer.

It only takes about 5 minutes but it keeps our color very consistent.
