Color Management Basics

Hello,

I've got Fiery's connected to our Xerox Versant 80's. A client would like to be able to better predict what our output will look like by proofing on their office Epson Artisan (inkjet) printer. I've spoken with people from both Xerox and EFI and am starting to gain enough knowledge about profiles, etc... where I can almost suggest a solution to our client. However, I would like to learn a little more about "the basics". Such as "what is a source profile?", "what is an output profile?" and "what is Rendering Intent?". EFI's site has a wealth of information, but I've been unable to find real basic color theory. Can anyone point me towards a source?

In my opinion and from my experience, the best book for beginners is "Real World Color Management", by Bruce Fraser, Chris Murphy and Fred Bunting. I think it is considered the "Bible" of color management. A bit outdated now, but the basics haven't really changed that much.

A slimmer more direct guide is "The Color Guide and Glossary" published by X-Rite.
what is missing in every color management book that I've ever seen is a clear color flow chart. I.e. What is happening at each stage of the process from image capture to output and the ffect of choices made at each stage. :p

Thanks all! EFI does have a nice video tutorial that addresses most of this process, the part that is controlled by Command Workstation that is. They even put together a nice flowchart: View attachment fiery_colorflowchart2016_us_en_us.pdf
