cured tinting problem

back in feb i posted a problem with tinting called '' trouble with tinting '' and tried some of your suggestions (thanks for the help, much appreciated) but i was still getting tinting mostly on my 7th unit (magenta) but never on my 3th unit (magenta also) it just so happen the other day the regional manager for service dept for komori stop by my shop and asked how things are going, i told him i loved the new press but i could do without the tinting in unit 7 after a little detective work he found the trouble.... the water in 7th unit was circulating way slower then the rest of the units when we put the temperature gun on all the water pans except #7 we got 60 to 61 degrees on the 7th we got 82 he re-adjusted the high- low sensor, got the pan circulating better, temp down to 61 degrees no more tinting..... problem solved! nice when that happens thought i'd share my story ...if it can help somebody else thanks again for all your help

Great to hear. I always like to hear about the physical solution to these kinds of problem. Something to keep in mind for the future.

How much did he charge you? Nothing, I am guessing. If this is indeed a new press. why didn't you call Komori for help? It makes no sense that you have been enduring this problem for some two months.

Edit: Also reading the earlier thread I notice that D Ink Man had suggested that it might be a fount temperature problem in his second post there:

"Also make sure your fountain tank reservoir is between 55 - 60F to enable your water pans to be about 65 F. Temperature and coverage always the most important factors."

didnt realize that the pressmen had been turning circulator down to stop alarm from going off and yes i did call komori they first suggested messing with fountain solution then ink then changing the water rollers cause they were glazed all this seemed to help at first but when another long run would appear and the problem would start to rear its ugly head again but not as bad.... seemed like we were improving and your right i should make sure and read all the replies because d ink man had the answer this is definitely the web site to come and get your problems fixed thanks again ...............steve in omaha
 
When I first read your problem I thought it was a temperature control problem. The main reason I thought that was, magenta is the most color sensitivity (man Roland study from 80's or 90), you have longer press (5 plus units) and the type of temperature control systems that everyone sells. If you do a thermal graph of the press you would see the front of press is the coldest and the end of the press is the hottest due to the dryer, paper friction, air flow, etc.

The other factor which is more important is PTC press temperature control. There are three types of temperature sensing single zone (most common) omni zone (very rare) and Multizone (rare).

Single zone (most popular due to price). There is one temperature sensors that measures all the return water as it comes back form the press. So the front is on the cold side and the back is on the hot side when the press is running. The bigger the press the bigger the problem. Generally on install the tech will increase flow on the back and decrease it on the front.

Omni zone. There is one temperature sensor on the press in the middle end of the press. This will solve most of the problems. Of course the back and front will still vary a bit.

Multizone (Most expensive hence not so popular except with very high end printers and waterless applications) Each unit is controlled individually so the first and last can be exactly the same temperature. However Yellow and Magenta like to run cooler.


The other problem could be fountain solution flow. Often due to inadequacy of the pumps of the low end circulator and the filtration the flow to anyone unit can be affected. A good idea is to check the conductivity at each unit of press.
 
Komori's have quite a sensitive water pan alert, and an irritating bell that can go on for some time even tho the pan level appears to be fine by eye... so i can understand why the pressman acted the way he did...i have done the same thing myself! However he should perhaps have related the issue back, when 1 of 2 identical units running identical inks is having a problem, maybe that little adjustment is more important than he thinks!

On a related issue we had an akiyama that had very difficult water control issues and ran very high water percentages just to get a good job, with the reason being that the water flow levels were so low to prevent flooding that the temp in the fount was at a point that it could not do its job properly... any jobs on uncoated stock became a nightmare of curled stock..
