The Future of Digital vs Offset Printing to 2022–a Smithers Pira study–predicts digital printing will continue to grow in most print sectors across the world. Mono electrophotography is being superseded by full-colour inkjet. The introduction of B2 & B1 digital presses will squeeze the small format cut sheet toner market, as companies look to higher performance equipment.
Currently, digital print accounts for 16.4% of global print & packaging in value, but just 3.9% of the volume, up from 12.0% of value and 2.2% of volume in 2012.
The analogue to digital transition is accelerating as new, high-performance equipment in adopted by printers and packaging converters. By 2022 digital will be 19.1% of value and 4.3% of volume.
