when doing front to back registration on my 7655 its slightly off. i know that this is not by any means a production machine, but how would you rate it? or would a dc 2060/5252/6060 register better? thanks!

a Xerox DocuColor will definitely register better.

The Xerox WorkCentre 7655 is an office unit.

Isn't that machine based on the xerox docucolor 250/252 range. In which case the registration would be the same?

a machine is hardware + software.

Both models have the same hw, but the sw (including the registration sw) are different.

That's bizzare. I understand selling machines with reduced features, slowed down and with crappy rips, but essentially running different firmware that doesn't work as well really sounds a bit crappy.

Any roller fEed print engine can only do 1mm f/b registration at best. I've been told by xerox techs that if you can get 1mm or closer, it's a damn good machine, but 2-3 mm is within their specs. A docucolor probably won't do much better at f/b registration, as the software inside the machine is mainly looking at leading and trailing edge timing. In my experience, if you run both sides separately from the bypass you get better results. Duplex paths often increase the registration error because the paper is being rolled around a lot more.

There is a definite increase in quality re registration color management and consistency when you look at the digital presses instead of the copying machines from xerox and if you are seriously desirous of printing higher quality work invest in an appropriate rip and buy it from Fujifilm with their color support combined with the mechanical support from xerox to get the best of both worlds.

We have an ApeosPort C5540 which is a similar machine and with a few tricks eg foam to hold the bypass guides we can print manual duplex with less than .5mm front to back.

But we have to adjust page position in the front end due to the lack of a controllable rip
