From an advertiser point a view, I can tell you that using IDEAlliance Gracol C1 and SWOP C3 profiles/color data has brought a real positive change in color predictability on our end. We make our own Gracol C1 and SWOPC3 proofs with tight tolerance. When we choose a print supplier, we always prefer those who can match a Gracol or SWOP proof and printers usually come with a good match. So I guess those printers must use the G7 methodology to achieve such results. Or at least they use the same color data we use. We even ask for Gracol color looks with digital jobs, large format inkjet jobs to have the least possible color variation between different printing technologies. I never actually operated a press myself but as a former drum scannerman, I find the whole "priority to grey balance and rest will follow" concept logical.
