Graphic Means: A History of Graphic Design Production

This is a well-done documentary on the history of graphic design production.

It certainly brought back many memories for me! I started in this industry 25+ years ago as a film stripper burning plates for a 4-color offset press, and I also operated a camera shooting line-art to make poly plates for simple 1-2 color jobs. When I first started, we were ordering film from service bureau, then we bought our own CTF imagesetter to make film in-house, then we upgraded to a CTP imagesetter to skip the film altogether! I even got to run an AB Dick with a t-head back then. It was alot more work, but it was more of a craft and it was fun. It was interesting to watch in this movie how much more complicated the process was before I got into the business!

Pretty Cool, I got started in Printing in 1984 working for USA Today as they launched the paper. It was high tech for the day as the film was produced on local image setters that the files were transferred to via satellite. Stripped on a light table for a few years and was fortunate enough to work with Scitex Imagers and Assemblers when they 1st came out, before the days of Macs. But my fondest memories of this industry was working on a light table, cutting ruby, laying process colors, making shrinks and spreads. Like the original poster said, it was fun and to be really good required craft and skills.
