September 21-22 marks the dates that KBA will be celebrating the 200th anniversary of the world's first press-building shop in 1817.
KBA had its start when printer/inventor Friedrich Koenig traveled to London in 1807 looking for investors for his steam-driven printing press. In London, he met engineer Andreas Bauer, and in November 1814, The Times became the first newspaper to be printed on their double-cylinder press.
In 1817, Koenig and Bauer established their press company in a former Würzburg monastery, and in 1823, Haude & Spenersche Zeitung in Berlin was the first newspaper on the European continent to be printed on their presses. This laid the foundation for printing on an industrial scale, and for media access to a much broader section of the population. Although Koenig died in 1833, his widow Fanny Koenig & Andreas Bauer continued his work, delivering their 100th press by1838.
Andreas Bauer died in 1860, but the business that Koenig and Bauer jointly developed was carried on by Friedrich & Fanny Koenig’s 2 sons. Today’s management team at KBA represents the sixth generation of the founding family at the helm of the company. To read more about their history, use this link.
