So. Windsor, CT based Keystone Paper & Box Company—celebrating its 75th year as a New England folding carton producer, has announced the purchase of a Landa S10 Nanographic Printing Press—the company’s first digital press.

Keystone says they are aiming to move 50-60% of its high-end Beverage, Pharmaceutical, Medical Device & Consumer Packaging jobs to the S10. Keystone’s calculations indicate enhanced efficiencies across production by moving a large number of inefficiently running offset jobs to the S10, freeing up significant offset press time. This will also eliminate 1,000s of aluminum printing plates per year, resulting in cost & environmental savings.

Keystone’s evaluation of the S10 included successful runs of a variety of real Keystone jobs, as well as visits to other Landa customers. Installation is planned for Q4.

Landa Nanography

This is now getting interesting. The Landa press concept will have to prove itself in actual day to day operation. It is going to have to be productive with normal crews instead of factory technicians. There is nothing like running actual production to find out problems that were not imagined in the development stages.

It is great that Keystone will move a fair amount of work over to this new press. The question will be, as time goes by, if they can keep it on the Landa press or will they have to move some of the jobs back to offset.

I am very curious to know how the blanket will hold up, since I consider it to be the weak link in this Landa process. Best of luck to Keystone.
