Laminating options for UV Flatbed prints

Hi,

I have recently purchased an Oce Uv flatbed printer and am happy with it. We mainly print on pp and PVC materials sheets between 1m to 2.5m lengths and 1m width and a maximum of 430 micron. We also intend to laminate/varnish some of our prints for customers who request it as the UV doesn't have that gloss or sheen as oposed to other printing methods. We need a low cost process for laminating. I have heard that a hot or cold roll laminator will not work due to the rough surface layer of the UV prints, i.e air bubble potential, is that correct? I was looking into uv laminators, but also heard that there is potential that the laminating solution will tint if it is oil based, due to the solvent not fully curing, is that correct as well? We only are looking for a light coat, to give it that rich look and smooth feel to the print. These laminated prints need to be flexible and able to be cut into shapes as well using our summa cutter. I appreciate your feedback.

I have been printing and laminating UV Cured Prints for nearly 10 years. Originally printing with a Vutek pv600 and now a Vutek QS2000. We use Mactac and ALC cold laminating products (both films). Yes you do get silvering around the image if its not full coverage, but this disappears after a few days as the trapped air escapes.

The only issues we have had was when we used a new product, both SAV and Laminate, and it failed miserably, (typical manager trying to save money which ended up costing us more).

Like solvent printing, the prints need to be fully cured, print and leave for a day or 2 if possible.

Your best bet is to print a number of prints and take them somewhere to be laminated with various laminates and test them yourself.

Hope this Helps

Damian.

Hi Damian,

Thanks for your feedback, I intend to try a few different laminating methods before intend to purchase a machine. I am leaning to UV coating, as apparetly there are UV liquids that don't bleed the OCE inks. I will see how my tests go.

Regards,

Alex
