All right I'll chime in
I have used Prinergy Connect I will rate at the top of the workflow game period.
Insite is the industry standard for online connectivity - proofing for the client.
Coupled with rules based automation it is really hard to beat.
Other systems seem to try and match up but most fall short.
EVO is a scaled down version of Prinergy Connect without the Oracle database system, & is ok for smaller shops.
Never heard of Odystar.

We used to be a Kodak Brisque shop. After much investigation we decided to go with Esko Nexus. It has been great. A MUCH lower cost of ownership. In 2 years the service contract savings will pay for Nexus compared to the cost of Kodak service. I agree Prinergy is great system but the cost of ownership is crazy.

Are you talking about the service contract when you refer to cost of ownership, or the acquisition cost?

I am referring to the service contract. Although the purchase price was lower as well. As far as the previous question from PCmodem having not worked in production with Prinergy it's hard to make that comment. In talking with other shops using Prinergy i believe they are. There is as much automation as you want to do. There may be more time in initial workflow set ups than prinergy. It the old thing the good thing is you can do whatever you want. The bad thing is you can do whatever you want. Now you just need to figure out what you want to do.
Not even close. Prinergy is light years ahead of Nexus Total RIP in the PDF game. Nexus was a great postscript workflow in it's day though.

Joe have you used Nexus 9.xx? Curious where your conclusion comes from?
I used Nexus for the past 9 years or so until about 1-2 months ago. Never bothered with 9.xx once the decision was made to switch. We did try Nexus Total RIP on Nexus 8.6. We weren't happy with it though. We also tried Odystar about 3 years ago as well and we weren't happy with it either.

Interesting what didn't you like?
Speed. We use double size plates on all of our presses. Smallest is 36" x 47". Largest is 49" x 57". It would take anywhere from 4 to 15 minutes to screen one color on these size plates with Nexus Total RIP. This was whether they were imposed PDF's from Odystar or from Preps PDF to PDF job, output as JDF into Nexus Total RIP. It's a bummer too as I always did like Nexus but we couldn't live with that kind of throughput.

I just checked our workflows from last night and a 5 color 40" job from start to finish was 4 minutes 47 seconds for 5 plates.

This is a interesting comparison. Really you are comparing apples to oranges. Prinergy is a superior system to Odystar in the means that it offers a total solution. Web portal, database etc...
Odystar was developed to be a front end automation engine and later it was equipped with a PDF rip.
Odystar does not have the database, web portal or built in imposition but it does have better automation capabilities.
A better comparison would be
Odystar vs. EVO
Backstage vs. Prinergy.
All 4 are great systems, it just depends on what you are looking for.
Odystar = Superior automation. Weak on Job management as well as soft-proofing and approval chains
Prinergy = Very strong on all aspects. Also about 5 times the price of Odystar
A company I know uses prinergy for there screening and plating but they also have Odystar in front of the prinergy to do all the Automation that prinergy can't do. So while they are different style workflows, they do have the ability to compliment each other as well.
Just my thoughts.
