ORIS Flex Pack proofing system - is this the next big thing for digital proofs?

For many years, our main component printer has provided us with Fuji Final Proofs. Fuji is no longer supporting that hardware and they are also having problems using that proofer with newer workflows. We've tried the Epson route before and have not been satisfied, so they are presenting ORIS Flex Pack as a higher-end digital proofing system. We'll see some tests soon, but wanted to see if anyone else is using this system, and, if so, what do you think about it.

The Flex is for “flexible” and not “flexo”, however this of course is aimed at packaging mockups and proofs for flexo and litho print methods (whether flexible, folding carton, pre/post print etc). CGS ORIS have specifically formulated their own extended gamut CMYKOG eco-solvent inks and also add the standard Roland DG white and silver inks in as well. They also formulate their own range of solvent media, including transfer paper, self adhesive vinyl, boards, shrink films, clear film etc. The Flex Pack RIP software supports both solvent and UV printers, so it is possible to digitally finish a solvent print with the UV clear ink for embellishments etc (two separate printers).

Gregg, I think that you will like the samples. IMHO for packaging, the Kodak Approval was better than the Fuji Final Proof… and the CGS offering is the closest thing to the Kodak yet (disclaimer, I work for a dealer of both the Kodak Approval and CGS ORIS Flex Pack).

The solution has two general options:

1) Use an ecosolvent coated media specifically designed for the solution to directly print

2) Use an ecosolvent coated transfer media film specifically designed for the solution to indirectly print and laminate to the final substrate

We came very close to buying this. Sadly uncoated boards loose their texture after print is applied to them with the transfer material. It's a fabulous bit of kit. It looks like they are adding new features to it still.

It might be overkill as just a proofer but if you are prototyping a wide variety of packaging, this is for you.
