Photobook Printing Presses

Hi all,

I've had a company within our estate approach us looking to create photobooks. Basically their idea is that they'll send me pdf book that needs to be printed double sided on 350gsm card, with a creased hinge and two hole punch and they then send it to be bound in premade leather folders.

Now we only have a Versant 80 which even on a good day I wouldn't personally feel is suitable for photos especially for the wow factor expected of a photo book.
I've shown them prints and they're happy with it as a possible way forward but I'd really like to come up with a suitable alternative, even if it is sending them to another print company with the correct equipment.

I've seen the likes of the C83hc which look to be better suited to photos but are these even the correct printer?

Does anybody know an exact printer that should be used for such a job? Are we talking toner or inkjet or something else?
I'd just like to know what printer would be best so I can try and track somewhere that has one.

Blurp ( which is owned by RPI ) has both HP Indigo an Xerox iGen - but am guessing they are using HPs to print the books

A local photo book printer in my area who specializes in wedding and quincinera albumns, uses a KM C71hc for their prints. That's the predecessor to the C83hc. Their books looked amazing! However, if your client is happy with the prints off your V80, buying a whole new machine based on 1 client doesn't seem like the best idea. No guarantee they will stay with you or the business will be consistent enough to cover the costs.

There are a plethora of photo book design software web2print service providers available online. What matters most is "your photobook software requirements." For example, if you wish to personalise your photobook web to print design tool with extra templates, clip arts, and other features, you must inform the software suppliers and pay accordingly.

Indigo is the popular way to go. Shutterfly recently purchased I think either 30 or 60 HP 100k Indigos to expand their operations for photo books. One of my vendors recently installed their own 100k. I had them run a job on it for me as a test to checkout the quality - seriously impressive for a digital print.
