Printing Stripes for dummies

Morning All,

I'm not a trained press operator in the sense i learned a formal qualification, we installed a 4 colour B3 press about 6 years ago and i learnt from our day minder, i ran the press through the night.

Long story short, printing offset was a great choice for our business and has been a great success, we since installed another press, a 5 colour B3.

The problem is, i can run the machine no problem, makeready fine, setting curves and all the gizmos and gadgets are great but to my shame i can't set the roller stripes (inking and damping).

Problem being, every time i'm shown it tends to be an age before i need to adjust the settings, so its slipped the old grey cells.

I wanted to know is there any books that explain the principal, roller layout etc? i can be shown physically which bits effect which pressures but i want to understand the principals, then it'll sink in for sure.

the press operator's manual should explain how to take out the rollers then install then and stripe them

As Mazengh said you need to get the operators manual for your particular press. This will show you the recommended stripes and how to adjust them. If the manual is not very clear or you are not running with the same stripes as in the manual due to various reasons then you should have the lead operator go through the process of setting the stripes with you while you take digital pictures and write down the procedures for yourself. Next step would be for you to 'teach' someone else how to set the stripes on your machine as there is nothing better than to learn by teaching.
Your roller supplier should have some good information about setting and care of rollers and the principles of good roller settings.
Good luck
