Profile Editor Weirdness

Greetings,

Today when attempting to use Profile Editor 5.0.10 on a MacBook Pro (320 GB HD, 4 GB Ram, 10.6.6) I experience some "weirdness".

I am trying to edit one profile in the CMYK > Lab direction and when I open a CYMK image is looks strange - see attached screen shot.

Additionally when I click on gamet view, immediately after the gamut view window opens, the program crashes - see screen shot.

Anyone have any idea why this is happening.

I use Profile Editor infrequently and the last time I used it all work as desired.

Hey there Bill,

Just confirmed everything you mentioned. I'm on 10.6.5, but have the exact same issues.
There hasn't been much updating of ProfileMaker in the last...decade, and with i1Profiler set to release, you'll not likely expect any now.

Profile Editor Weirdness

After my original post, I did some research on Exception Type: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGBUS), which was in the log file I posted. It seems that there are numerous programs that crash with this same exception.

While most of the fixes address solutions to a specific program that has crashed, two are "generic". The first one is to zap the PRAM and the second is to fine the Combo updater for the present version of the OS you are running and install it.

I will be trying the ram solution first and if not successful, I (tonight) download the Combo for 10.6.6 and apply it

I will let you know my results.

I tried both of those solutions, but no luck. Funny, but Monaco Profiler has an issue initializing the "Tweak" profile, so editing is apparently broke through that route as well. Profiling editing is so noughties.

Just curious, what is it you want to accomplish by editing the CMYK-Lab tag?

I ran an initial press run and made a profile and then a proof via my CGS rip. When I ran a confirmation run I had a mis match between press and proof. Made a revised profile from the second run and then ran a third confirmation run. Third run matched original profile, almost. I adjusted my proofing queue to better match the press piece. I am not awaiting more press runs with production jobs to see press to proof match. Older flexo presses do have their challenges.

While waiting, I thought I would adjust the profile using the same adjustments I made to the proofing queue, and then use the adjusted profile and create a new proofing queue to see how close it matched the press. I figure if I am adding curve adjustments at the proofing rip, then if the original profile (unadjusted one) is used in Photoshop to check color, it will not be an accurate match.

Basically I am still learning (fine tuning?) how to work with analog plates on only flexo presses.

I turn 60 tomorrow - do not want my brain to shrink and what better way to stretch it than trying to master color management with before noughties press and plate technology.

I also tried both solutions and found neither helped. However, I also run Parallels on this computer so I downloaded the PC version of ProfileMaker and loaded ProfileEditor. It seems to work okay as long as one retrieves and saves to the folder that Windows has it profiles in. When I tried to save to my shared Windows and Mac folder Editor froze.

From my reading and the fact that this is the second program, the other is TAP - a program from Kodak that allows one to view 1 bit tifs, I have had this same memory problem with on OSX, but not when I use a PC version of the program under Parallels, I suspect the problem is with OSX, not the applications. The fix for the other app was to uncheck "show icon preview", and "show preview column" in the view options window of a finder window. Kodak figure that one out.

Always, always, did I say always? , use the combo updaters. The delta updates from Software Update do no always update all the necessary files.

back to the regularly scheduled topic....

OS 10.6 does mean problem for other profile inspecting apps too… think it has to do with system level graphics rendering engines.
