Remote Proof and the bindery

We rely heavily on remote proofing here. However there are jobs that bindery is not sure how to fold or finish for sure. If we make hard proofs then some of the purpose of remote proofing is gone. Work also flies thru here at an extremely fast pace. What do any of your companies do that embrace a remote proofing workflow to help bindery/finishing?

We still put folding dummies in with the job - just some lasers they are only used in bindery - Our softproof is used for color - so we're not making expensive proofs -

What can be described with a folding dummy that cannot be described in written language on the ticket?

Even folded dummy can be misleading without artwork on it to show proper fold, which side is in and which out.
Sometimes design can be misinterpreted by different operators, you definitely do not want to play guessing game in Bindery, it can lead to spoilage.
Perhaps description with written text describing artwork and which side is which?

Have you considered using JDF folding libraries and assigning a fold for every product? Operators can refer to a specified standard and can fold the piece without having to guess about the artwork. You would be surprised at what percentage of your jobs you might be able to handle this way.

around our shop . . .even the dummies have this side up somewhere on them . . . and the folding dummies are what we use as modern blueness/lo rez art . . .

Great feedback. I wondered if there was a more "digital" or "tech way" to do this. The JDF folding library sounds interesting but I'll admit I've never messed with that at this point.

We have recently added a TXT Planning option to DataManager's web portal. It provides the ability to digitally connect to MIS systems, convert orders, receive graphics (FTP and other), compare and fix all supplied TXT pages boxes, run through Pitstop workflows, extract, merge to finalized the compose PDF then used to build a list of required signatures with page assignments, Each signature is then assigned a JDF fold to use, which then can be used to send all that into a planning engines like Metrix or Impostrip, then read the output JDF . We have a JDF planning page that turns the layout JDF into a visual picture with the PDF thumbnails imposed. We then can print out Bindery reports, layout reports, or view the job and all is layouts in a Web Browser Press side. the Display JDF page highlights any position placement or organizational issues for QC purposes, or reports. Standard layout JDF can be saved into templates, and redeployed with new pages and content without going back through Planning engines to change the Digital Layout (think of it like a Die that needs to be populated)
there are also workflows to handle page changes and updates with a complete history to those changes throughout every printing of the book, perfectly accurately without any order entry since it's built upon the layouts JDF to display this information
