Screens for Fiery or just Remote Desktop?

Hello Deckm00, I have the E-27B rip with the Ricoh 5300S. I've found that since the RIP doesn't have a GUI, I cannot select a method of shut down, so in case of having Hydro surges when I'm not around(gone home for the day or weekend) there can be no damage caused to this very sensative Linux based RIP. The RIP had to be re-built twice since both items were installed a few weeks ago. Now, after seeing how much work goes into re-building this small RIP, and losing all the jobs that were held there for different reasons, I am quite afraid of it happening again.
Would you suggest turning the RIP off every evening before going home? I only suggest this because if squirrels cause transformers to shut power off in this area(which happens quite often), or a bad storm, that can also happen, I really don't want to have to re-build this RIP again.
I like your idea of connecting a monitor and keyboard/mouse so I can access the RIP. Is that something easily done?

Tommyboy, as you mentioned, the E-27B is a Linux-based RIP. Connecting a monitor is useful only when the RIP has Windows installed, which the E27-B does not. What you could do is set up a PC at or near the printer and load Command Workstation on it. Turning off the RIP daily is not a problem at all, and I would also suggest archiving critical jobs to an external location, just in case. I think you should also be able to power down the Fiery from the Smart Panel touchscreen. Question; did they include an ESP Surge Protector/Noise Filter with your Fiery, which is supposed to protect sensitive electronics from lightning strikes, surges, transients, noise, over-voltage, and wiring faults? If not, I would ask about it. Alternatively, you might want to think about an APC uninterrupted power supply unit.
 
Yes, it was installed with the surge protector, but when power does go off when the building is empty of people, there isn't anyone to take care of the issue of the c5300 losing it's Rip. I have since connected a laptop to the machine and now can see and choose settings at the machine, instead of at my computer desk. Quite handy, but since i've had this machine, it has exhibited issues that I had with the 5100 and the 6150ex. These ricoh machines just don't like duplexing without smearing the toner along the printed side when doing the other side, so many issues to be fixed and it's already 2 1/2 years old! Ricoh is holding back on the actual quality issues these cheap machines all have. Shameful really, when all they do is try to come up with logical solutions, or answers that don't fit the bill much at all. Nonsense really!

Tommyboy: I don't know how far up the flagpole you've escalated this but you should not be having these kinds of issues. Contact your local service manager and if you don't know who that is, or if you're running into other roadblocks, contact both your salesperson/manager and-or your solutions engineer (the person who delivered the Fiery and printer training to begin with). If you are having trouble finding the right person up there in CA let me know and I'll see what I can do for you.

Thanks for the reply. I have gone quite high up the flag pole, but no one has any answers yet. They say they are looking into things, but they are so busy because of putting these, and other machines in every office they can imagine, it's left them short handed and without the right amount of training. So basically, I have to endure all the shortcomings of the 5300 myself. My training did not happen in person. I had been given some zoom training, but it pales in comparison to actual face to face and hands on. They said 'in person' would happen but it's been 2 1/2 years and nothing. I realize I should not have these kind of issues, but I do, and there is nothing I can do about it. I have to use this machine to make money to pay bills, and have to work around the issues.

Hi Deckm00 - do you have any idea how to escalate issues re. totalflow prep? i've put lots of comments and feature requests in on the official feature request page but have heard nothing back. in my last message i pointed out that EFI are working on A5 tab support which will remove one of the main advantages that TF Prep has in our market at least. there just doesn't seem to be any active engagement or appetite to develop the product.

biggest problem it has is that the presets / hot folder functionality does not work at all when trying to work with any kind of tabs.

in my last message to them i encouraged the product manager to get in touch as i can advise them on how to really make the tab features be the best on the market...
