Single Res Printing

Are there any offset printers who are doing single res printing? By this I mean vectors are rendered to the same resolution as images in a ctp environment. Is it feasibility for high quality printing. (high quality defined as ISO12647-2 type 1 & 4, so no spot colors required) I can imagine a couple of things wrong with the workflow such as bloated file sizes and detail loss with some content, absence of smooth shading, but since there is no such thing as a workflow that is 100% optimal, I am thinking this may be a good option for our plant - at least a good conditional option (e.g. preflight detects line weights are thicker than .25 pt and text above 4 pt, trapping not required, or whatever). I am grateful for any thoughts or experiences you can share.

Although I referred to iso12647-2 as an example environment, if fm screening would make single res printing more enabling, then by all means, let's go fm.
