We are trying to set up our press to do heat transfer, I have adjusted the press curve to the suggested values the ink manufacturer set for us but we are still printing to black when we adjust the black curve we go Magenta. Do we need to ajust the art instead of the curves. Any info at all is helpful.

Printing the right color and tone

Printing the right color and tone

I would suggest:

1. get good 3-color gray balance
2. adjust for a 'nice' tonal range (that is neutral from highlight to shadow)

Tool:
Download the free P2P target from GRACoL: General Requirements for Applications in Commercial Offset Lithography
Ramps 4 and 5 are 3-color and black.
Calibrate your 3-color curves so that your're getting good grays on the entire ramp.
The black curve and the 3-color curve (ramps 4 and 5) should roughly match. Black could be a bit lighter.

In order of importance:
1. gray balance
2. tone reproduction
3. color

cheers,
joe
