But, but, but ... I'll lose my food stamps!

On the other hand, there have been times that getting the usual 25-cent raise would have put me in a higher tax bracket and lowered my take-home pay.
 
Did you ever get a raise that you felt was so small and insignificant, that, your initial impulse was to say "That's ok, you keep it. You obviously need it more than I do" ?
 
Back in the 90's I worked for a small family-owned prepress shop. When review time would come around, the process was very informal. When it came to the raise portion of the discussion, the owner would slide a folded piece of paper across the desk with your increase written on it. One year a coworker received a ten-cent-an-hour raise and told the owner to "keep your dime, you need it more than I do". He left the company a short time afterward :)

I quit a job that offered me a 17 cent raise. (A lot of years ago now) I told them, that's not a raise, it's an insult. Turned and left the building.
