Toner-based Digital Print v Litho

Carrying on from another thread, is the future of digital print solely to get as litho-like finish as possible?

I'm thinking in particular about printing on uncoated paper - should the manufacturers be aiming for a flat, matte-like finish?

Or would customers who are used to seeing the punchier, but shinier, digital print finish begin to complain if their work started to look flatter and more litho like?

The low-melt toner already looks much more matte than the toner that uses oil. In fact, I don't like the looks of it on coated stock. It looks like crayon sometimes to me.

A lot depends on the kind of work done. Some jobs' purposes are more suited to the shiny finish. Sometimes it's up to the customer. One thing for sure, it's hard to predict what customers want and how their preferences will trend. Most customers I deal with don't know what they want to begin with.
