Xerox 700 digital color press, most paper will not feed through from the high capacity feeder

Hoping someone can help. I have a Xerox 700 Digital Colour Press and it has just stopped sending most types of paper through from the high capacity feeder into the main part of the printer. The only paper I have tried from the bypass tray which actually goes through the normal print path is anything from 150gsm or lighter and no job works on duplex now from any tray. Most paper is getting stuck either in the same place half way through the registration transport, or if it is very thick paper it gets stuck as it enters the main part of the printer. I keep getting registration errors such as 078-111. I have cleaned all the sensors and rollers and have checked the print pathway thoroughly (there have been a couple of bad jams recently) but there is nothing there now.
All the gears seem to be turning and working OK. I am stumped to know what to try next.
Thanks in advance

What other error messages are you getting?

Couple of thoughts-
1- if paper doesn't move at the expected speed from sensor to sensor, the printer may jam. Old rollers that don't have sufficient friction can cause this.
2- the registration unit may need calibration, overhaul, or replacement. You can get a new one from Partsdrop.com.
3- the high capacity feeder may need a motor or belt replaced if it is not feed at all from certain trays, but start with the feed roller kits if they haven't been replaced in a while

4- there are belts and pulleys that may need attention on the back of the tray that holds the registration unit, fuser, etc

you can clean sensors for eternity and it will not solve your problem
the issue is the motor in the back of the registration transport

Thanks so much for your help so far. I have done a number of other tests on the Xerox 700 machine this morning and I've got a better idea of what's happening (or not happening more to the point). I too think it may be a motor or pully issue more than a sensor but knowing which ones are the issue and what I do about it is bothering me, we aren't on any sort of contract now as I bought the machine outright when the 5yr contract finished and I don't know of any engineers so have tried to fix problems myself up to now, but this one seems challenging.

I know now that any single side print from either tray 5 (bypass) tray 6 and tray 7 all work fine up to approx 250gsm paper but anything heavier always stops as soon as it hits the main body of the printer and I have to pull it out from the high capacity feeder side. The error code I get for that is 078-111

The other big problem is nothing is working from trays 1 2 or 3, they all get stuck before they get stuck on the way up and again I have to open the high capactity feeder area and open the door to pull out the paper e.g. on tray 2 I get an error code 072-105.

On the same note nothing works if it is set to duplex because I guess a motor or pully is failing to pull it up and round onto the main printing path. If I try to run a job with duplex from tray 5 the paper gets stuck in the duplex area 2d and I get error code 077-123

Does this info help for anyone to gell me which pulley or motor system I may need to replace please?

Many Thanks

the 700 model is antique and obsolete and has been for a decade
I havent been back there in a long time
if you take the back cover off and look on the left side you will see the motors
its kind of below the bypass tray side
there are two motors and I cant remember which one of the two its is
once you take it out you will know
hopefully you know how to take the back cover off and swing the back open

Check to see if the nip release solenoid for the registration is working. It should lift the rolls right before the registration roll up to allow the registration roll to take control of the paper. The little lift arm can wear out over time.

Hi Milo, thanks so much for suggesting that this part may be causing the issues we are having. We have a tiny multimedia company in Buckingham and we are trying to fix this problem ourselves but have no idea where to start. Do you know where we can get hold of the service manual for this machine please?
We have looked at the service manual for our 250 docucolour machine and we think we have worked out that the part you mention could be the invert roll nip/release solenoid, are our assumptions correct please?
Many Thanks Chris

I'm having real problems finding this 'Nip release solenoid.' I'm hoping it will be shown in a Service Manual but I can't find one of these for the DC700 either, does anyone have a service manual PDF for the Xerox 700 Digital Colour Press or could point me to where I could get one please?
Many Thanks
Chris

you might have more joy on copytechnet, or by scrapping the machine and getting something on a service contract.

I would love to have that option but that isn't doable, one way or another I have to get it going again. I bought this 700 machine for £2000 when the 5yr contract ended. If I could source a service manual, I might stand a better chance, one must exist somewhere!
