Xerox 700i Dots/Damage to Black Drum

Hello Hello!
We have a confounding problem. We have been running our xerox 700i for about 9 years. We have actively maintained the machine. Most of the internals have been replaced over the years. We always use OEM Toners/Developers/Drums. Recently we received what we think was a bad batch of black toner (OEM). It clumped up and clogged the black drum so badly that a gear inside the drum snapped ( we took it apart to see what happened). We have always used OEM toner/developer/etc.

Our prints started having freckles all over them. When you look at the drum you can see spots/dots/pitting that correlates with the dots on the print. See the yellow print I've attached. When we looked at the drum it looked like someone sneezed on it.

We had the machine opened up and thoroughly vacuumed. The black developer housing was replaced, and new developer was added. The toner delivery system was cleaned. Both black toners were removed and brand new OEM toners installed. A brand new OEM Drum was installed. First day of printing, no spots. Now all of a sudden the same thing. At first, it was only two spots. The more we print the more spots appear on the drum.

We are confounded. The second image is a white sheet printed today which shows the re-emerging dot pattern. This has happened with three Drums so far.

The machine has had the following parts replaced within the last 3-6 months: IBT Belt, CMYK Dev Housing, CMYK Developer, 2nd IBT, Fuser, (assorted worn rollers), all the filters, Back Up Roll (BUR) Housing Assembly, and Drums (due to normal wear and tear)

Any insight/direction would be appreciated.

I've reached out to local repair guys, no one has gotten back to us.

The only thing I can think of is that you got some bad drums or there is still some dirt in there marking up the drums over time. There was a problem with another model last year with bad drums. We even got a couple of empty toners that were supposedly brand new. Xerox suppliers seem to be slipping. I sure wish you luck. We have a 700i too, and I like it better than the newer model.

I was thinking along the same lines- Possibly dumping all the developer, and vacuuming EVERYTHING again, and then AGAIN. We can't think of anything else that would cause th is.

we went through that too with our V80. First it was a bad batch of drums, the tech took all that we had and ordered us new ones, then it was a bad batch of toner that was destroying the drums. Again, tech took everything we had and ordered us replacements. I think they ended up replacing a LOT of parts before it was all better again.

If your printer drum is doing the following, it's time to replace it:

1- Blurry Prints.
2- Black Spots.
3- Poor Print Quality

I recommend you to buy a new Printer drum. For brands, you can go for Brother, Lexmark, HP etc but in my opinion, you should buy Sharp drum because of the price, quality and performance. My drum was also messing up with my printer, so what what I did was replace it with a Sharp drum and now my printer works absolutely fine.

There's another thread where other ppl mentioned the bad toner problem. Something I didn't know until recently is that the black drum is always active even when not being used. If the toner is the problem you may still have bad batches of the toner. I'm not sure how you make sure that the toner going into the machine isn't causing additional problems.

I'm thankful to be on a CPC so that I don't have to pay to replace all these drums/developers/toners and the subsequent parts that are being damaged by this problem.

I already reported you, but please tell me how a Sharp drum is going to fix a Xerox printer.
