Xerox IGen 3 Perfect Binding Problem

We have a Xerox IGen 3 digital printer and we are facing problem with perfect binding the books produced since the cover is not sticking to the book block.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks.

What perfect binder are you using?
What stock are you using?
How many pages are the books?

We have a BQ270 and on occasion if the book is small and we are using coated stock we will have to leave the book in the nipper for a few extra seconds to ensure a good bond.

Sorry the problem is endemic. Irrespective of the binder (and the Horizon BQ270's good at this) hot melt glue and the release oils used in Xerox printers (and most other printers) will cause difficulties in binding. The release oil stops the adhesive from working - like the coating on a non stick frying pan. It is worse with coated stock (cover or text) and the extent of problems will vary with how much (or how little) coverage there is close to the spine or milling area. Paper grain perpendicular to the spine will also create problems. Uncoated inner cover, uncoated text papers, fine and effective spine milling will improve matters but both spine and cover and book block itself still risk falling apart before too long. There have been some improvements with newer styles of toner - generally those encapsulating release oils.

The effective solution is PUR adhesive binding with appropriate milling but that's a whole other ball game (or conventional litho printing).

We are well aware of the issues with EVA but we are still able to get around them. Also running our covers on our x700 rather then our x800 helps a lot since the reduced amount of oils in the printing process. Unfortunately the iGen3 does not allow you to control fuser oil settings. We have had our BQ270 since 2005 before PUR binding really caught on and we have had 0 books returned when do the few extra steps required to ensure good adhesion. I would still be interested in answers to the original questions that I asked OP.

We are using a Heidelberg 1300 perfect binder, a Muller Martini Baby Bony and a Buffalo 600.

The text stock is 80 GSM wood free paper and cover is 300 GSM art matt. Also 115 GSM art matt text and 250 GSM art matt cover.

50-300 pages.

Our HM661 EVA glue has been successful for many iGen users. It is Xerox tested.

Please find it here on our website Glue

It is posted under Hot Melt Glue with a full description towards the bottom of the page.

Has anyone tried the mentioned glue above "HM661 Hot Melt Glue", We are also running iGens with the Bourg BBF2005
