Xerox Square fold trimmer and Two knife trimmer

Hi guys, I have just seen a Xerox J75 specced up with the aforementioned Square fold trimmer and Two knife trimmer and were wondering how good these really are. Are they as convenient as they are made out to be, do they actually do the fold and trim as good as "it says on the tin".

I have a square fold on a 550. It does a super job with the square fold. You won't need a two knife. Square folded boolets lay flat enough to trim a decent stack in a guillitine.

I am with Xerox. We just added the 2 knife option this Sept at Print13, we have sold / installed a few in the US and Canada with good results. I used the unit and ran it for 5 days at Print13 and was pleased with the simplicty and robustness (it was my first time using it). If you do a lot of 3 sided booklet work it is a solid investment. But, you are right, a Guillotine works great on square edge, but, you have labor and another process (I did premake some 3 sided booklets in our lab on a guillotine for the show, and I thougth the in-line booklets looked better, and they were easier to do automatically). Note that you program the 2 knife cuts from the trimmer UI, not on your DFE as part of the job. So if you change a print size / cut requirment via the document, you need to change your cuttter UI settings. Also the 2 knife has 'fingers' for spine support so your square edge (which is an awsome 'poor mans' perfect bind) remains nice and square.

The 2 knife is only available for the Xerox Color C75 and J75.

We have the square fold trimmer on our C75. It does a pretty good job. My only complaint, is that it does vary as far as the finished trim length. While this usually doesn't matter too much, it is something to keep in mind. Our finished booklets tend to vary around 1/16th of an inch. If something is really critical, we will trim them on the guillotine, but the square fold is great. No complaints there.

We're on our second Square Fold Trimmer. The first one when out of square to the point it wasn't worth using the trimmer. The second one is a reconditioned unit and we've had it about a year and its out of square again on the trimmer showing trim at 2mm past the trim mark at the top and no trim mark at the bottom. One in 10 books are square trimmed. The Square Folder feature is perfect, its the trim that causes us grief.

On Versant 80 is the Square Folder Trimmer the same unit that as is on the J75, 700i??

Rodney, yes, the Xerox Square Fold Trimmer module is the same product that is offered on Versant 80, as is the Two Knife Trimmer option. Finishing accessories don’t have a meter like on the press – so be cautious on reconditioned units, unless you are under a service contract – it is like a car without an odometer, it might look good, but, have very high mileage. For more robust and production level of finishing we added DFA finishing connection to Versant 80 so you can now add a Horizon or Plockmatic (see Plockmatic Pro 50/35™ Booklet Maker for Xerox Printing Systems ). I really like the Sq. Fold Trimmer module for what I call the ‘poor man’s perfect bind’ for the ability to flatten that stapled spine – however, if you are looking for more production capability it is a good option to step it up to DFA options (they cost more - but, provide more production capability and consistency).

Yes the Square Edge Fold Trimmer is under Service Contact as is the whole 700i we have. The second Square Edge Fold Trimmer had little use so I was told so it was added to our 700i to keep us in production as there are not many spare Square Edge Fold Trimmers just sitting around down here.
