Spray powder not working on bottom 1/3 of load

Hi all,

I'm a carton printer and am having some problems with press loads sticking towards the bottom. We are a carton printer and running mostly 18 pt. CRB. If the loads (3,000 sheet loads) are sitting less than a week, there is no problem, but if it is longer, it becomes an issue. We are aerating loads before going in the die cutter feeder. On these older loads, if you run your hand across the sheet, you don't really feel the powder on top of the sheet. If you feel a sheet that is near the top, you can feel the powder just fine. Has anyone come across this? It seems like the powder is getting pushed into the clay coating after sitting a while. Is that even possible? We are running a 450 coated powder.

we used one of these at the press to check our spray powder coverage.
Maybe have your dryer checked out

Is your concern you don't feel the powder or that you are getting some setoff, blocking, sticking causing print quality defects and waste?

I suppose I should have worded it differently. These loads are sticking at the bottom. We are not getting set off from the ink, but you can hear the ink crackling as you are breaking apart the sheets by hand.

Regarding the "sticking" noise, No harm, No foul!
The sticking can be separated with an aerator/skid turner.
At least the sticking is not creating any defective waste.

We are aerating and it is still happening. It's kind of crazy, watching and listening to these loads crackle while they are being aerated.

I am assuming this is the water based coating thats sticking.. check your coverage and if you have any slinging or build up on the edges do you have a roll coater or an Anilox coater..
