Fonts, Servers and our new iMac

I think Prepressguru is correct on this one. Snow Leopard (10.6) does not come with Appletalk, as far as I know and that is what you need to talk to server so your fonts are not 0k (this is only for old PS type Mac fonts, TT and OT fonts are not affected with this). Another solution would be to...

    PDF Overprint

Investing in online soft proofing option might be another solution (costly but effective). Pixel streaming or other technology used by different vendors accurately displays PDF without worrying about overprint preview on or off in client's acrobat.

    Removing hyperlinks from PDF

Mnoll, did you see my reply? Is outlining text not an option? I believe that is the only way you will get what you want. --And Greg, he already mentioned that preference in original post and that is not what he wants to do as far as I can tell.

    Removing hyperlinks from PDF

Quick way would be to convert text to curves, which is not the greatest solution in itself, but if loosing links is more important to you than retaining flexibility and editabillity, than go for it. If you use PDF enhancer to do it, it will even retain search function for text. Other than that...

    Cockpit and Lion

I know I might insult Java lovers and Java developers, but in my opinion, Java might be great for big iron and server/client architecture but it's garbage for end users. I think it is too complex and the only reason someone would code in Java is to save money on developing and maintaining cost...

    Cockpit and Lion

I am curious too, especially since I doubt Lion will ship with Java. Oracle is suppose to release their own version of Java for Mac, but will it happen on time and will it be ok?

    dieline export from Quark

If that is the only artwork in Quark, maybe you can skip Quark altogether and do the same thing but from Illustrator EPS?

    Pitstop and Pantones

This is the way to do it, unless you are talking about alternative color values of the spot, in which case you have to change it per PDF or in workflow, if you have such thing.

    Pitstop and Pantones

Both Acrobat and Pitstop Preflight offer you this function, to map all inconsistent spot names to whatever you want, C, CV, CVC, ...

Mac OS X 10.6.7 ok? how about fonts?

I updated to 10.6.7 as soon as it was out and so far so good. I did not run into font issue, that I know of until today, probably because bug affects only programs that rely on system to make PDF, it does not affect Adobe Indesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, etc.. so it's kind of irrelevant for me...

    junior pre-press operator_why?

My take is they want someone to train properly, who is not "spoiled" and does not have burden of "old world" with it's bad habits. Younger person is usually easier to train and you can "carve" really good operator with little talent to start with.

    Help with PDF

If the content is not clipped beyond boxes, than you can resize bleed box to 5 mm. You can use action to set bleed objects close to edge to bleed but sometimes it does not work the best so you might have to manually do it by enlarging clipping paths, etc.. How many pages is book?

    Screen 8800N at 4000 dpi

The reason I am asking is that couple of different vendors list different speeds when using higher than regular 2400 dpi resolution. e.g. 30% slowdown or even more. Something is slowing them down when using higher than regular resolutions, I don't know what. Since Screen did not list slowdowns...

    Screen 8800N at 4000 dpi

Not really, from what I read there it does not list different plate throughput for different resolution, but it doesn't claim otherwise either? Thanks for trying.

    Screen 8800N at 4000 dpi

Does anyone have insite in Screens CTP device Platerite 8800 N series and their capability to run 4000 dpi. -Is 4000 dpi both ways? -Does it slow down the speed of imaging or it's the same as e.g. 2400 dpi? Thanks

I've got response they will come and do it. Couple of weeks later support guy came in and upgraded us. He left me several PDF's on what's...

    Cut Marks offset in Signa?

Hi Jeff and thank you. This is good workaround, I tested it and it works as advertised.

    Cut Marks offset in Signa?

Does anyone know of easy way of offsetting crop marks or Cut Marks in Signa? SIgna is such a smart system, much smarter than Preps, you would think it has automatic way of offsetting marks that is tied to bleed for example so if you say in Master pages bleed is 0.25" instead of standard 0.125"...

should metalics run first or last?

This is a fight we have internally, prepress wants metallics down last as everything is pretty much designed that way, also it makes logical sense to hide traps with opaque (metallic) ink and it forms the shape. Our pressman, however will rather die than put metallic last and call us crazy. They...
