Flexographic Technical Association’s (FTA) technical innovation award goes to Koenig & Bauer’s (K&B) Flexotecnica, Augmented Reality-DataGlass Remote Support system. The award—recognizing the most innovative & impactful technologies for the package printing & converting industry—was presented at FTA’s trade show InfoFlex-2019, held May 6-7 in New Orleans.

Combining a high-definition camera, headset and microphone, the new product allows K&B remote support specialists to see exactly what on-site technicians can see. The K&B specialist then provides targeted support & step-by-step instructions on how to remedy the problem. By providing this one-to-one conversation, the K&B specialist is able to diagnose and get a customer’s production system up & running without delay, eliminating the wait time for a technician to visit.

I was talking to a Xerox tech on the phone about a few years ago and said that this would eventually be a feature to facilitate easier maintenance and learning of the digital presses. I did preorder an HTC Vive when it first came out, it turned out to be a very impressive piece of hardware, but they had a long ways to go in terms of developing the apparent resolution and garnering wider support for applications. Valve did announce a new headset last week or the week prior that supposedly fixes the first issue to a considerable margin. In any case, it's a natural path for any industry to pursue that has to deal with complex maintenance and support issues in a 3D space. I would imagine Xerox providing these headsets in the next 5-10 years with their presses as standard.
