food safe ink

Has anyone printed with food safe inks? Is there a site anywhere that posts the FDA requirements CLEARLY on what is required to print direct contact material?

Mike.

What printing process are you using ? Conventional sheetfed or dry-offset UV. What substrate are you printing on, Plastic , Poly or coated board stock. If your printing UV inks, there is no inks or coatings approved for direct food contact. On the conventional ink side there are food safe inks and coatings. You really should be talking to your ink supplier for their food safe specs.

We have contacted our ink suppliers. There are only a couple options, according to them for direct contact inks. ColorCon is one but they are very expensive. The bigger question is, where are there specific rules on stock, coatings, printing facility qualifications, die cutting (paper dust) and other issues that may affect the acceptance as a qualified direct contact piece?
