Greatest Rock Album of All Times

Re: Greatest Rock Album of All Times

I previously posted and restricted myself to one selection. I'd like to expand my list to 5. I don't know that it's possible to pick even 5 that are the greatest of all time. 25 maybe... but here go my 5-
1- One Size Fits All - Frank Zappa (previously posted)
2- White Album - The Beatles (coulda been Sgt Pepper or Abbey Rd)
3- Are You Experienced - Jimi Hendrix (first album I ever bought, it changed what I thought about music)
4- Led Zeppelin I (I can't make a list without Led Zep - coulda been IV)
5- Deja Vu - CSNY

Re: Greatest Rock Album of All Times

Wow, what a question?

Rock Albums? Hmm?

Pink Floyd's Dark Side Of The Moon, I believe stayed over ten year on the top 100 albums sold each year.

Every song in Boson's Debut album is great and it sold either the first or second most debut rock albums ever.

The Beatles body of work (or at least most of it) speaks for itself.

The Moody Blues, Days Of Future Passed, a day illustrated in song.

Wow I can go on, but my favorite is Pink Floyd's Animal album--yeah weird ah.

That's always been my favorite Pink Floyd Album too, followed by Meddle, or maybe Ummagumma, although the level of enjoyment with those last two albums increases logrithmically as sobriety decreases (thinking of "Several Species..." here). Hard to find the standard rock song structure (Riff-Verse-Chorus-Verse-Chorus-Bridge-Solo-Chorus) in there.

Not weird at all Jamie, I'm a big time Floydian. Animals is a great album and I listen to it often. Dogs reminds me of a few salesfolk I've met along the way. When my wife and I got married, Wish you were here was the dinner music. Some of the old hippies knew it and the old folks just thought it was great jazz, couldn't hear the lyrics. Try Obscured by Clouds if you don't own it already, great "unknown" Floyd album.

Saw Floyd at RFK in '94, they opened the second set with "One of These Days", made the hair on your arms stand up, way too cool for words.

Saw 'em at the Silverdome twice that year. The Pigs still haunt me.

Re: Greatest Rock Album of All Times

Never got into Floyd to existential or something I prefer it straight up.

Now talk about haunted, I saw Iron Maiden back in the day and didn't know about "Eddie" the entire front half of the audience went tearing ass for the back when the lights came back on and he was standing there.

Actually it was pretty funneh.

Re: Greatest Rock Album of All Times

HA HA, bet that was freakin' hilarious. Number of the Beast would show up in my top 25. What was the name of the album that had "The Trooper" on it?

Piece of Mind in '83 I believe.

Remember this handsome fellow?

Re: Greatest Rock Album of All Times

Nice! Killers was an awesome album too. It's hard not to like Maiden.

Re: Greatest Rock Album of All Times

Pressmen arguing about rock music and bitching at each other about nothing. Wow! I've never heard that. And what was that about Nazi's? Since ,originally, the German National Socialists were all for Germany for Germans I would have to say that , in this context, you would be espousing Pressrooms for Pressmen. That don't sound so bad. I never have liked salesmen and customers in the room. So you could call me a Print Nazi and I'd be proud. Best rock album of all time? Who cares? I've never worked in a shop that would allow a radio in the press room. I don't want to listen to it there anyway. I need to hear my press give its noises. But if this is just an opinion then it , hands down, goes to Metallica with the "And Justice For All" album. Slayer with "Reign in Blood" is a close second. I've lived with pressmen too long. Most can surpass a drunken sailor in cussing and trash talk. This forum needs a no holds barred flame room where the surliest of us can bust each others chops as only we can.

Re: Greatest Rock Album of All Times

Hmmm... And here I thought not all pressmen were drunk and bitter. After this and the heart warming story of your eldest child (see "Did you lose a bet") we'll put your vote in for whatever album The Starland Vocal Band recorded.

Re: Greatest Rock Album of All Times

3) Deep Purple - Machine Head
4) ACDC - Back in Black or Highway to Hell if you prefer Bon Scott
5) Fleet Wood Mac - Rumors
6) Pink Floyd - Animals/Wish You Were Here
7) Rush - Rush(From Vinyl) or 2112
8) Van Halen - Van Halen
9) Metallica - Black Album
10) Rolling Stones - Sticky Fingers

Also rans

Alice Cooper - Welcome to my Nightmare
Aerosmith - Get Your Wings or Toys in the Attic

Re: Greatest Rock Album of All Times

All valid choices Larry. IMO, Rumors falls under pop top 40 not rock in the strict sense. Highway to Hell was the theme music for my first vehicle, 72 Bronco, top off balls out. 2112 got me and the rest of the Olympic Quarters Team to the beach several times. Definately some good picks there and many memories associated with those albums. Thanks.

Re: Greatest Rock Album of All Times

"Yeah, thanks to that whole equal rights thing, they're everywhere."

Damn. I bet they even got the vote now.
