I know this might sound stupid, but I was wandering if it's possible to replace IR drier lamps with UV lamps on a heidelberg 40 inch press drier in order to be able to use UV coatings
 
I would not recommend that you do this or even try it. UV Bulbs require some serious cooling and special housings and voltage, you would probably start a fire and your insurance would be void if it was found that you had used improper drying equipment.
 
I would think that with a clever enough engineer and sparky it would be doable.

Obviously you're going to have to look into the voltage requirement of the lamps and upgrade wiring etc to suit, and as Cornishpastythighs suggests be very aware of cooling requirements as a fire could easily result given the high temp they run at.

I'd also check with a Heidelberg specialist with regards to wether or not the mechanical parts in that area would require heat shielding and possibly if another oil would be required to cope with higher temperatures.

Simply put, I don't think it would be cheap to do, but trading the press in would certainly be more expensive and possibly involve downtime etc... I like the fact that someone would have a go at something like this rather than just trade it: to my mind its the kind of attitude that deserves some respect :)

On modifying presses for jobs outside of their original intentions, we used to run a job on some Akiyamas that was up to a million+ runs then perforated on another single col A2. One of the Aki's (628) was fitted with a solid bar that mounted up to 16 GTO style perfing arms/wheels. The common impression cylinder between units 5/6 was fitted with custom jackets, and there you go: a machine capable of printing at a comfortable 10-12,000sph and 16 up perfs at the same time. Whilst I'm certain that there would have been better machines available with perforating as an option, this was a cheap, well thought out modification that saved us mountains of time ;)
 
There are plenty of companies that will retrofit a couple of UV lamps after your coater and it will be done safely. Make sure your press is equiped with Shadowless grippers or else you might get some uncured coating at the front edge.

You will probably find the majority of press fires are down to the UV lamps. Our envelope machines dryer used to catch alight on a weekly basis.

is it due to the powder that stays in the press when the lamp is not used?
 
Thank you Gaz. Although it wasn't simple, one of our best investments in the past 15 years was going to UV. With the proper set-up UV can make a big difference in the type and quality of forms you produce.
 
Why don't you just by some second hand UV varnishing machine it will be cheaper for you.Yes yo have second pass but also UV varnish is always better when is applied offline
