Printing in USA at China prices.

It was only thirty years ago I was being told American printers were ruining the magazine business by producing them on web presses instead of sheetfed machines. Americans were said to not care about quality printing in the magazine field and if we didn't change our evil ways immediately, the price structure of magazine printing would collapse. In Europe.
Every countries printing industry needs to concentrate on their strengths and compensate for their weaknesses, or wither away.

I believe magazine printing and particularly on web presses is alive and as well as can be expected with the current changes we (some) are excepting in which media is being delivered. Looking at the magazine racks at drugstores and airports there are as many publication selections available as perhaps there ever were.

Personally and you may guess, I like it in my hand, ink on paper.

Happy New Year all. D

Our challenges as printers, in China, the U.S., the U.K., and everywhere else, include staying competitive with ever-increasing pressure to perform well against ever-stronger competition. (That phrasing is deliberately abstract.) All of you are my competition, and yet all of you are my brothers and sisters in the grandest craft in the world.

Step up to the challenge and we will all be served well. Shrink from the challenge and you will wither and blow away with the winds of change, while the rest of us survive and thrive.

Complaining about price pressure does nothing to change the marketplace in your favor. The marketplace wants value (real or perceived) and will not feed the "yes, but..." vendor. Ya gotta give something to get something. Sometimes the margin of profit will not be what it was in the past, or what you would like it to be.

It is really that simple. If you want to do business, you must compete. Even (Especially!) when competition is painful.

Best wishes to all of you for the new year. May you always be open-minded enough to compete intelligently.

That's a very broad and unfounded characterization. There any many printers in China and in SE Asia that run circles around your typical US printers in terms of quality presswork.

Unfortunately is so true.

Happy New Year to All.

Please employ the mechanisms that will allow you and your people within your spheres the best means to be prosperous, while at the same time having the mindset and wherewithal to be socially aware as dignified human beings.

Please do not make everything about price, because the implications and ramifications beyond the $ factor have many far reaching end results that need to be understood and appreciated. This is key as best can be interrupted by me. Look at the big picture!

Wishing you all a 2014 that exceeds your expectations.

Hi there

I purchase quite a lot of print in the UK as well as China and Europe and I have found the prices from Europe are more expensive that the UK and the Prices in China are creaping up at the moment as well, the shipping costs are to expensive, is the UK going to start to become a printing power house again ? so many web factories have closed but there are some very good printers in the uk who are very good on price and service.

I would much rather print in the UK than anywhere else at the moment.

I also run a website, and we also get orders from across europe so we must be doing something right.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but I compared your prices with a German printer I use regularly, and your prices are more than double!. And the quality of the German printer is perfect, as you would expect from Germans.

China printer can also do the high quality products. But you guys want cheap one. That's why we do it. And China printer do it becuase there is a market. We do everything according clients' requirements. The only thing is need to find the reliable supplier. With the quality & price you can accept. Then everything is ok.

I would suggest to keep the project inhouse. I have some customers who were purchasing packaging from China and approx more than half of those were not satisfied on lead time and quality they did receive to what they were expecting. so relying on local vendor would be a good option.

I have an Idea...why don't you move to China and live like the Chinese. When you try to sell your work to an out of work American you will know why. Americans can not compete with a country that allows their people to treat there citizens like slaves. This is basic economics. If no one here has a job they will not have funds to buy your product.

Yes i believe that we should give a boost to small printing and other industries at the time we are not ready to face any market slump. I would rather believe in creating oppurtunities for medium scale businesses at macro level.

You are right, but the China and SE Asia good quality printers are not Cheap.

Yes i do agree that some of them are well known and have a good printing setup. But here we are more focused on grooming our local market.

I have also had very good experiences with China and their products. I prefer to spend more to shop local, but it budget is an issue, there's no harm in going overseas.

Not to change the subject but I just heard on the news (here in California) that we have a new product coming over from Chins . . . . pollution . . . supposedly it is drifting across the Pacific and ending up in the central valley of California . .. so I guess its a matter of perspective when someone says "there's no harm in going overseas" -

It is one part of the equation of buying overseas . . .

just my 2 cents
