Does a saddle stitch cover feeder need a lip?

not really, can help to keep the whole book block the same, but not an absolute...

The short answer is no. But you should have planning put a lip in substrates run through your flat feeder whenever possible. This does not always work out in the grand scheme of things but I have seen more than one stitching disaster which could have been prevented if a cover had a lip on it when it had to be converted for running out of a form feeder.
