VDP does not work for 11x17?

wonderings

Well-known member
I was going to run a VDP, 2 up on an 11x17.5 sheet on our Xerox Versant 2100 with EX2100 RIP (Command Workstation V5.7.0.29)

I had the variable data imposed already, it is just a straight forward address going onto a static letter, all black, just text. So I make my master page with the static letter and then set up the variable to print. It RIPs. When I preview it only shows my variable data. If I scroll down to the last page I see the master page merged with 1 page and that is it. If I do the same thing but print it 1 up on an 8.5 x 11 page, it works no problem. I tried as well with an 11x17 sheet and it did not work either.

Is this a glitch in Command Workstation? Any work arounds so I can print this two up rather then 1 up? This is on a 24lb bond sheet, nothing fancy.

Hello there - just a lurking Xerox member, but thought I could jump in to help...hope you don't mind. I spoke with an EFI colleague, and below is his feedback:

"The user needs to create a single record master (IE no multi up), Rip and create master “n".
Next, create a 1-up stream of variable, send to the Fiery (hold)
Then, in the held job, set use master to “n”.
Finally, impose the variable file.
This will invoke VDP imposition and all will work, and it will process extremely fast."

I hope that helps you - and please let me know if you have other questions.

I am doing the imposing before sending it to Command Workstation. So the master static page I sent is already 2 up positioned how I need it for the stock. I then do the same imposition for the variable data. This leaves me with a PDF that is 350 pages of 11x17.5 I do not need to do any imposing in Command Workstation, just need to set the master. Then select the master for the 350 page 11x17.5 document of variable data.

Are you saying this can only be done if I impose in command workstation?

Hello again - sorry to play the role of messenger, but here is the response:

"Yes, you want to Impose the document using the Fiery Impose tool. That will allow you to Impose it and all of the records will flow correctly. EFI has some great learning resources for their tools, which can be found at: http://www.efi.com/resources/fiery-how-to-guides-and-docs/fiery-fs100-pro-and-fs100/. You can go down to the Variable Data section and take a look at the How-to doc for (Prepare and produce personalized postcards) That should walk you through how to use Impose with your file."

Again, please let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks for the info, but I am wondering if they are not really understanding what I am trying to do. If they are, then they are saying you could never do a variable data print on a larger sheet like 11x17. Ignore that I have my variable data set two up. I have an 11x17.5 sheet, this is finished size. I have a master page and a variable page set for 11x17.5. There are 350 records. It will not merge them.

You should be able to send the 2-up PDF master over, then the 2-up merged data PDF, and merge those with FreeForm in CWS as you are trying to do. It would be the same as sending 8.5x11 PDFs and then merging those, but the page size is 11x17.5. Do you have analyst support from Xerox for the Fiery? Have you not done this sheet size before? Many times in my very long career I have missed things that should have been obvious to me right away--we all do it sometimes. Even the experts! I'd say just to be prudent, start over with all new files and try again--which maybe you've done--but look at it totally anew and DOUBLE check all your settings and setup even the sheet size setup at the machine panel and work backwards into your workflow upstream. EFI has a very nice support program you cans buy for about $300 annually that give you access to Fiery specialist by phone. I've had many customers buy this and it's been a god send for them. Ask your Xerox systems guy to hook you up with his EFI channel rep if he doesn't know about it. Sorry I can't recall what the program is called right now.
