Xerox 7655 grey printing as purple (or pink)

Of course this shows up when I have an urgent job. Color shifting seems to be galloping away in all direction, but the immediate problem is that grey on a .psd (using CS4) is printing as a very nice violet/purple (the color of the frown face). I am unlikely to get a service tech here before next week, by which time I will have lost this job. Does anyone out there know how I might try to fix this problem?

What I have tried so far: calibrated, replaced the magenta drum, replaced the cyan drum, verified the problem on different stocks, verified that the grey is indeed grey in the document. Any other suggestions?

Any help will be truly appreciated.

what's the makeup of the grey, should it simply be a tint of black?

try running the job greyscale to see if It's being affected by heavy magenta for some reason.

set up a test file with the same grey and run that.

what rip are you using?

Convert to psd file to cmyk and change the grey area to K only values. It is not possible to consistently get nice 4 color grey on every single sheet from most digital printers

Thanks for the quick replies. Truly appreciated.
There's not external RIP on the 7655, the color control is what Xerox have set it at, as far as I am aware. Its really an office machine that I'm using in a digital print environment.
The PSD file is in CMYK. I'll give changing the grey to K values only a try... not too sure why I didn't think of that. Thank you tppsg.
I'll give your advice a go, Josh, and get back here.
Again many thanks.

Thank you to everyone for your input. I was able to get the job done on time. The solution was to install a PCL6 dirver. Especially thank you to tiger_scout for suggesting this. I haven't yet worked out how to centre the image on the sheet with this PCL driver, all sorts of weird placement seems to happen, but the colors are great; grey is grey.
In case it is of any interest to anyone, with the PS driver I was unable to banish the violet. Converting the grey to K only values did not do it. Converting the entire image to greyscale then printing in color resulted in the same section appearing violet when everything else was grey.
Again, many thanks for your input and for the timely resolution of the issue.
