A first-of-its-kind program in the US, Koenig & Bauer’s 18-month Apprentice Program seeks to attract & develop hands-on technical talent for the printing industry. To be considered, applicants need a 2-year technical degree in a related field.

For the past 2-years, the Dallas-based division has been working in collaboration with the Training & HR departments at its German factory along with Texas State Technical College (TSTC) to establish a Technician Apprenticeship Program that attracts & develops new technical talent for the printing industry. It’s currently a limited program with approximately 2-openings per year.

The 18-month program encompasses field training with mentors in the US, classes at the German Apprenticeship School located at the factory near Dresden, German language classes, work experience in its factory and specialized training. Apprentices are paid a salary and a housing & transportation allowance while living in Germany, for a period of up to 1-year, along with intermittent field training here in the US.

Upon completion of the program, an apprentice becomes a US field-service technician. The company emphasizes they are, “Offering a long-term fulfilling career, not simply a job”.

The first two initial hires are: Kaitlin Sullivan, a recent TSTC graduate with an A.S. Degree in Wind Energy Technology, and Amanda Beltran who graduated with an A.S. in Mechatronics Technology—an interdisciplinary field that combines the study of mechanics, electronics, automation and computers. Although the program is in its infancy stage, Koenig & Bauer (US) is planning to extend and duplicate it across the country, perhaps in the Northeast or Midwest.
