Nested Items

Interested in how your shop handles the layout of nested items. Specifically in how you write up sizes and space between. How do you handle them in your MIS system. We currently handle them as 1 shape with the dimensions of all items together but would like to more accurately list the size of the individual items.

Thanks for any input!

We use CAD software to step up the positions in a file and then use Pandora imposition software to step the art files.

Thanks Bean66,
So it sounds like you are treating them as one large file also. It is not so much the stepping that is the issue as the size of the items referenced on job tickets and such.

The CAD software will take odd shaped designs and step up or nest them. The Pandora software uses the CAD file to step and nest the art files. The art files are set up as rectangular pages in Illustrator, InDesign etc.

In our MIS solution, Accura, one enters the finished size width/height of the single size 1up art, however the end user is allowed to override the auto calculated number up count to allow for "dovetailed" step and repeat die/knife label files from a CAD or prepress system (Kodak Pandora, Esko Plato, Tilia Labs Phoenix etc).

The estimate, job ticket, job costing and other data will have the correct finished size, material used, step and repeat count etc.
