Perfect binding, also known as adhesive binding, is one of the most common binding methods in book production. The term "perfect binding" comes from its international designation "perfect binding," highlighting the superior quality and finish this method achieves.
What is Perfect Binding?
Perfect binding is a bookbinding technique where individual pages are bonded together at the spine using adhesive, without the use of staples or stitching. Unlike traditional sewn binding methods, perfect binding relies entirely on adhesive to hold the book block together. This method can be used for both paperback and hardcover books, making it the primary binding choice for high-volume book production.
The Process:
The perfect binding workflow involves several key steps:
1. Collating - Pages are gathered and arranged in correct order
2. Feeding - The book block is fed into the binding machine
3. Milling - The spine edge is roughened to increase adhesive bonding area
4. Adhesive Application - Hot melt adhesive or PUR adhesive is applied to the spine and side edges
5. Cover Wrapping - The cover is wrapped around the book block
6. Pressing and Cooling - The book is pressed and allowed to cool for adhesive to set
7. Trimming - The final book is trimmed to size

• Thickness Range - Optimal book block thickness is between 3-30mm; books that are too thin or too thick may experience binding issues
