PIA has launched a grassroots call-to-action for voicing opinions to U.S. members of Congress on personal impacts triggered by Section 232 Tariffs on Steel and Aluminum, by the U.S. Government. The highest quality sources of aluminum used for printing plates are countries in the European Union—countries subject to the tariff.
Within the past 3 weeks, major U.S. suppliers of aluminum printing plates announced price increases and/or surcharges as pass-through costs to customers. Michael Makin— PIA CEO—said, “Three major aluminum plate suppliers pointed directly to the aluminum tariff as a reason for these double-digit % price increases”.
Although the U.S. DOC maintains a product exclusion process allowing printing equipment manufacturers to apply for exemptions & receive a response within 90 days, this process has been overwhelmed by the huge volume of applications from various industries. Timely deadlines are not being met.
According to Makin, “If your company is impacted by these tariffs, sharing your examples with your own lawmakers is vital to helping Congress understand the real-life impact of trade policy on the U.S. printing & graphic communications industry. PIA stands ready to work with Congress to advocate solutions that both combat unfair trade practices and avoid harming printing companies.”
