My name is Ken,

I 'm a independant consultant with 30 plus years in the industry. I focus on technical issues (color management, web/sheetded press, paper, ink) as well as manufacturing operations (reducing waste, improving material yield, supervisor training, cycle time reduction and building an infrastructure for sustained improvement. I live in Pennsylvania but work all over the US.

I look forward to networking with as many people as possible, make business contacts and learn as much as I can. Let me know if you have questions.

Hi. My name is Ravesh and I'm from a little town called Pietermaritzburg which is found in South Africa.

I'm currently the Works/Factory Manager of a medium sized Sheetfed Printing Company. I started off in the Print industry, 22 years ago and began my trade in Origination which evolved to DTP and then I headed up the company's PrePress department.

Our current PrePress system is Prinergy 4, including Kodak InSite and a Trendsetter Quantum II.

Our sheetfed presses are a KBA Rapida 105 (8-Color Perfector), Komori 28 5-Col, Komori 40 4-Col, 3 × 2-Col Heidelberg SM 102-2 Perfectors.

We also do our own finishing with 3 × Stahl and 3 × Herzog Folding Machines, a Muller Martini Trendbinder with PUR Slot Coater and a Muller Martini Gangstitcher.

While my expertise has been in the PrePress area, two years ago, I was promoted to the Factory Manager, responsible for PrePress, Printing and Finishing/Binding.

It has been a difficult transition, but what an awesome amount of knowledge I gained, however, still much more to learn and hence the reason to join this specialist printing community.

On a personal level, I'm 39, happily married and have two daughters.

This is Pam from SD who travels through a little of IA to get to work in NE. Have worked in the printing industry for 20 plus years and got in on the birth of digital printing, even used PageMaker 1.0. WOW that is ancient. I work at a commercial print shop. We use Screen TrueFlow with a Screen Platesetter and Epson 7800 proofer.

This site was recommended via a contact at Screen USA and I know networking is always the most efficient way to track and solve printing problems.

Personally I have two feline children and a parakeet I rescued from our warehouse at work. I am a big rock and roll fan and love going to concerts.

Zubaz here! 26 year old male (100% Norwegian-American)

I was a bagger at a grocery store in middle school, a landscaper and Target technology salesman (cameras) in High School and worked in food service and the Mail room in college. For the past 3 years I have been a consultant for a locally-family owned full line vendor representing Sharp, KIP and Konica Minolta. I work with a lot of printers for only being in the industry for 3 years and am very interested in expanding my limited knowledge in this part of the industry. As a consultant I hear press operator's opinions of people in my career and I would hope I am seen by my partners as the atypical consultant. My goal is to learn as much as I can about the things most important to the people who operate my devices and how I can make their job easier. At the end of the day I go to sleep with any issues my devices have and sometimes, but not often, I don't sleep well. Working for a mid-sized organization that competes very competitively with national dealers makes me proud that when I say something I stand behind it and at the end of the day if I did my job the next time my partners look for a new device I'm the only consultant they call.

Personally I enjoy spending time with family and friends, traveling to little known places and listening to all types of music (oldies to the current billboard top 100 and everything in between). I have 7 brothers and sisters who mean the world to me and a girlfriend who keeps me in my place.

I am willing to answer any questions anyone has from a biased consultative perspective to the best of my ability and look forward to future discussions in this very cool forum.

Chou! - my step mom is portuguese (Recife, Brasil) : ) so I'm fluent in about 10 words!

:rolleyes:Hello my name is Marc Potvin, I have been a web offset pressman for 20 years, and am now in charge of maintenance.
I've been with the same company since I got out of high school and never looked back,
Not sure if that's a good thing LOL
Well it must've been good cause I'm still here.
Started off by running an old Web Leader when I was 19 and have been on Goss communities since the company purchased them in '94-'95 can't remember now it's been too long.
Glad to have joined this forum, I'm sure I can still learn alot. Looking forward to doing some reading and research
Thanks:D

Hallo PrintPlanet,
this is my first post. My name is Ivo & I'm from Bulgaria.
Working in Pre Press company , also involved in webdesign , photo corrections and retouch.

How do you do my name is Stu,
I ended up in Graphic Arts because I liked the smell and thought it was cool. My teacher said I would never make it as a printer. I now own my own small printshop doing digital, offset and letterpress work. I'm located in Winnipeg, have 7 children (finally figured what was causing that!!) 4 dogs and two cats. I look forward to sharing what knowledge 30+ years of printing has taught me with the forum.

Hello All

Hello All

My name is Neal, I've been in the industry 15+ years. I'm currently the prepress manager for a flexo printer in NH. I was the prepress manager for a medium sized offset & digital company in CA for several years before that.

I'm joining this forum to use as a knowledge source, and perhaps to offer some assistance myself.

Hello PrintPlanet

Hello PrintPlanet

My name is Ken. I have 28 years prepress experience, although I'm sure I can still learn alot. I’m the prepress manager for American Printing Co. in Birmingham Alabama; We are an average size commercial shop. 200 employees, full bindery, and fulfillment. We have several presses, but our meat and potatoes are a couple 8/color sheet fed presses and a couple of heatset half webs.

We use the full blown AGFA prepress workflow (ApogeeX) with 4 renders/trappers etc… Our prepress department has complete redundancy. 2 Avalon’s, 2 Epson proofers, 2 Grandsherpamatics, Kodak Approval, etc… We are close loop linked to the pressroom and also have Press-side Monitor Proofing at every press (installation is in progress).

Because of the fast changing technology, we budget to completely replace all our prepress equipment every 4 years. It has really helped us build our customer base when they see us doing this.

Glad to have joined this community, I don’t work on jobs, but I have to point my team in the right direction for answers, so I'm looking forward to doing some reading and research. I also would be glad to help out any way I can.

On a personal level, I'm 45, happily married and have one daughter, and a niece that lives with us.

Btw, I’m originally from Chicago….so, Go Cubs!!

Ken

Hi all, I'm Jim Mellema, and I own CompuDoc, Inc. We are an independant graphic arts dealer in northern Illinois. We do a lot with Harlequin Rip systems, and we fix old film stuff that no one else will touch.

Hi everyone!
My name is Maricruz Manning. I am a studio manager at a pharmaceutical ad agency. I have a printing degree and worked at printers for 13 years and jumped to the "other side" about 10 years ago.
I still have ink in my blood and joined to keep up with the print world and to continue learning.

In my spare time I love to play with my dogs and work in the yard.

Hi,
Just joined the site,so I figured I'd introduce myself.
I am a pressman at Lake County Press Inc.,Waukegan Il.,been here 22 years,a head pressman for the last 16,or so. I previously was an auto mechanic, but a bad back put an end to that. I started here as a janitor to get my foot in the door, and found that my mechanical background and schooling helped me problem solve and understand the presses fairly well.
I run a Heidelberg 105 XL 8 color w/coater,set up for full time UV printing. I have been running this press since it was installed 9 months ago,and it's my first experience running UV.
I hope to learn a few things here, and maybe help a little when I can.
When I have free time,I like to work on and occasionally race my 71' GTO. I also coach and enjoy watching my 6 kids in their non-stop sports.

Time to Introduce myself

Time to Introduce myself

Hello
My name is Steve.
I have been involved in some part of printing starting the 70's. Caught the bug from a very good Graphic Arts teacher.I have worked from floor to press and have landed in Pre Press(so much cleaner).
I am now working for Cultech in Edison, NJ specializing in cosmetic packaging (lots of shinny stuff).
I just started working for this company in August of this year. My main responsibility is to bring the pre press department into the digital age kicking and screaming all the way.
I grew up on Sytex-Creo-Kodak and am now learning Rampage.

I have used this site for answers to problems I have run into and will need to lean heavily more so now.

Although not an artist. I have always felt that printing is an art, not just another job. I have real pride in seeing the jobs I have worked on printed.

Steve

Wow...reading this makes me feel like such a young pup. Yikes.....

30 yrs old and 13 years experience is nothing compared to some of the changes a lot of you "old hands" have seen.

I've been absent from posting for about a year.

The last year has been tough. Not because of the economy as much as the illness of my brother, Paul, with Esophageal Cancer. My brother and myself were supposed to take over the family business in 2007, but all that changed with his cancer and eventual death back in June, 2008.

I love printing. But for the last year I lost some of the passion dealing with business without my brother. Now a few months removed from his death, I can feel that passion returning and although the business is very bad, I now have the energy and enthusiasm to begin growing the business and also providing this forum with my knowledge and even more important gleaning it for the knowledge of others who post. Should you want to see my original post in this thread you can see it on page 4.

Finally, I am grateful for God and His Son, and my Savior, Jesus for helping me get through this tough time.

Introduce Yourself.

Introduce Yourself.

Been a printer for a long tme and we have shifted towards large format and engineering printing. We run Oces: TDS 800 and TDS 500 and CS-9090 which is 90 inches wide.

Lately we are looking into reviving or offset department with the acquisition of a CTP system.

Looking forward to interacting with our fellows in our trade to discuss issues related to our trade and other life pursuits.

Work 5 days a week, but keeps weekends for myself and my family of 3 boys, and exotic fishes. Weekends means, no phones, no faxes. Emails accepted but will read them Sunday evening. Weekends are also family time for cooking and sharing the weeks experiences among us. Friends add meaning to events like these.

Hello to everybody!

Hello PrintPlanet!

Hello PrintPlanet!

Greetings from Austin, Texas!

Eric Welch here. And here. And sometimes here. I suppose I qualify as an "old warhorse" in the print industry, having been involved for 18+ years mostly on the graphic design end (my real passion is indie video production, but it doesn't pay the bills so well). Anyhow, I'm glad to have found this site and all the cool and talented folks associated with it.

See you 'round the Forums!

Hey All
My Name is Steve. I work for Ricoh as a Service Tech Team Leader. I started with Lanier who was later bought out by Ricoh, who now just bought out Ikon.
I am more than happy to answer any questions about troubleshooting or functionality of Ricoh (of Course that includes Lanier, Savin and Gestetner).
I enjoy my work with copiers and computers, and it also has become a hobby. Which is why I joined this forum. I am also interested in learning more about what people think of different machines. This way I can express those concerns to the engineers in my company.
Thanks for having me!
