Xerox (Versant) 2nd BTR streaking marks work around

Hi,

This topic crops up alot on here amongst Versant owners (my V80 being on of them). Just thought I'd share my workaround.

Problem - 2nd Btr creates drag lines from waste toner. Occurs mainly on coated stocks and results in 2nd Btr needing to be constantly replaced way before its due. More common with less coverage on jobs.

Solution - As the problem rarely occurs when larger coverage is on the sheets I had an idea. I placed solid bars (C100 M100 Y100 K100) on each end of the sheet as per image below. I've ran a number of larger volume coated jobs since and they have been perfect with no marking at all. I'm on contract so extra toner doesn't bother me cost wise. Only problem is I have to manually add these in indesign so imposing jobs is a problem still.

I was googling this to see if another solution was about and I stumbled upon someone with a similar solution on a xerox support site so I'm confident I didn't just fluke it myself. They explain why the solution works better.

Oh I do, always have spares and they showed me how to do it myself but I've had it where I've only gotten 10k and its gone again.
The above work around just means I no longer have to watch the machine and constantly check the sheets.

Xerox had changed the 2nd BTR to a softer roller which meant it was more prone to scratches. When my engineer came round to change it, he told me that they were being called out a lot for this reason. 90% of the paper I use is silk and this causes the problem, especially on the heavier weights. I went through a phase of changing 3 2nd BTR rollers within 1 month!!!!!!!
Problem doesn't happen as much nowaday, but thanks for the tip!!!!

Can I ask does this solution still work for you? Just that since from about winter last year the 2nd BTR’s I am now being sent are refurbished ones as they come in different packaging and don’t last as long for me. Not sure if this is a UK thing or worldwide service of the units. I am the same as you mainly print on silk from 130gsm up to 400gsm regularly. I print the occasional uncoated and print a lot of NCR jobs too.

To be honest I didn't do it for long. I really just ended up keeping multiple spares on site and replacing it more often. If I was running NCR I'd throw an old one back in if I'd recently replaced it. Literally have the change time down to 2mins.

I've found same with the refurbished versions. The refurbished ones have a different part number so I always make a point of giving the new part number when ordering. As mentioned I now order 2 or 3 at a time and if they question it I always mention the refurbished ones being crap so need to be prepared.
