I am the Tenderizer. Before the Univers font was, I am. I made the Film. I made the Plates. I created the PDF Pages and the Imposition Templates they inhabit; I move them here, I put them there. They go as I say, they do as I tell them. I am The Lord of The Files and my name is never spoken, the name which no one knows. I am called The Tenderizer, but that is not my name. I am. I shall always be. Your 36 layer .ai file with transparency is now mine; I shall flatten it as I see fit. To Me, your vitriolic wails and lamentations are merely the sound of one hand clapping.

EGO
**Ring, ring!**

"Tenderizer Press, this is T, how may I help you?"

"Well, hello Ms. Hubris... so you received your hardcopy proof..."

"Yes..I see... one moment, let me pull up the file..."

" Ok, Yes, I see here in our preflight form that we noted all the hairline rules were four color build ...but.. you did not want to change them..."

"Yes, the 'outlines' you're describing are called traps... yes, it's necessary to do that because on press the paper tends to.. yes, you see it stretches in the direction of the grain... no... not wood-grain... no there's nothing wrong with our press, its just.. it's just a physical reality of the printing process..."

"Yes.. we noted the .gif files in the preflight form... that's the result of a low resolution raster graphic... I see... the picture... it's... they're called Pixels... yes... the picture will look different on your monitor than on the proof... because..."

"Yes, I understand that the 'PuffyPals! Plush Toy Fan Club Newsletter' is very important to all its members. Yes, I see that... you certainly did put alot of work into your Publisher file..."

" Yes, Ma'am, I.. I'll be more than happy to have my Supervisor call you..."

"Thank you... OK... have a nice day, Ms. Hubris."

SUPEREGO
I know you want to leave in all the typos that the PITA customer didn't catch. I know you want to re-name that re-saved Photoshop file something vulgar. I know you want to add a subliminal message to the textured background of that guy's mugshot. I know you want to cherry-pick the job rack.
I know you.

Hi, Colorblind.

Did you ever use the Colorblind Color Management software/hardware?

My first real job out of college was a digital print-house, and they were in the process of setting up a color-managed workflow, using Colorblind.

I was as green as could be when it came to prepress, and didn't even know what color management was, but I do know that it was a major project that never worked out for that company.

Hi there all. I'm Greg and have been working in the Commercial and Newspaper industry for over 30 years. At the moment I'm the assistant prepress manager in a newspaper prepress department (goss web printing 40,000 papers daily), in Tasmania, Australia, which is gradually changing to become an advertising agency/newspaper production department which is an exciting move. I've seen heaps of changes over the years, but today's technology is the most exciting yet. We are running PCs using XP, just upgrading to CS2 after many years with Quark 4. We use the Cybergraphic system which outputs through Prinergy to Trendsetters at our Print Centre.
Outside of work, I'm married with a 12yo girl and 10yo boy and love playing golf.
Look forward to watching many posts.

Greetings! I'm a former A/V production assistant who got a job at a prepress company because I knew how to use a Mac. That was in 1992. In my thirteen years there I became somewhat of an idiot savant, learning a lot about electronic prepress but never dealing with the folks who actually put the ink on paper. In 2005 I embarked upon a two year vacation from the industry, homeschooling my kids while my wife taught English in China. With some reluctance, I returned to Seattle in 2007 and now work for a small print shop doing Mac work that's ridiculously easy and finding myself a bit stretched as I'm exposed to other areas of the industry. This forum has been very useful as I've been getting my head back into prepress mode. (Ah, the things we do for a paycheck....)

In my spare time I enjoy my wife, two daughters, reading, writing, photography, hiking, getting annoyed with my church and wasting time on the internet.

Hello everyone, my Nom de Plume is " Alois Senefelder" which you should all know was the inventor of Lithography, but seeing he is dead I thought he needed resurrection!! just to instill more knowledge of the " Chemistry/ Fundamentals of Lithography" Myself I am a recently retired Lithographic Printer from the UK. I had the pleasure of serving a 6 year Apprenticeship during the days long before Ctp Plates - when it was the norm of 3/4 hours making Litho plates, these ofcourse were the famous "Deep-Etch Plates" which started with the "Graining then Coating - Exposing then Etching and Lacquer the Image areas, at times I felt more like the " Sorcerer's Apprentice"

My name is Rob and I joined Print Planet through the advice of an acquaintance. He thought it'd be a good place to get in touch with professionals in the printing industry.
I am in Portland, OR and currently working closely with a commercial printing and packaging company that is looking to bring on board a strong printing manager to oversee their printing department. The machines this company uses specifically are Komori, Planeta and a Maxson sheeter. If anyone out there is interested in learning more about this position or to network in general feel free to respond.

It's a good company and I am just working with them to help surface strong, interested individuals. Thanks for listening!

Hello!

Hello!

Hello my name is Joel aka "LoneStar."

I've been involved in the print industry both as a designer, art director, and in the production end as a prepress specialist since 1981. My family owned a small quick print shop while I was in high school and after attending college I worked for a regional/national advertising agency producing all types of printed materials from newspaper and magazine ads, collateral material, to outdoor poster designs.

I returned to the world of print production working at a service bureau scanning oil mounted chromes on a Crosfield drum scanner and outputting thousands of miles of film using this funny little contraption called a computer and its archaic software. The company I worked for during this time was owned by a large commercial printer and was absorbed as the service bureau industry was phased out. We (three of us) were brought in and replaced 25 plus strippers and other production personnel with computer to film output and digital proofing. A few years later we moved to CTP and another couple of employees were let go. Real popular! All in the name of progress and TURNAROUND.

After a while I was recruited and hired by my current employer, a large university inplant to come in and revamp their prepress operations and manage their graphic design department. Within five years we moved from film based output to CTP.

Our output capabilities include: Heidelberg MO, three Ryobi 2 color presses, and 2 Nuvera digital printer/copiers. We are using a RamPage RIP, DynaStrip Imposition, Fuji (Screen) 4300e CTP, Epson Pro 7800 and 2400 proofing devices. Consumables: Fuji Pro T plates, various Epson papers and inks.

We have two full time designers who have been trained to preflight, RIP and output proofs of their files for our customers, if approved all that has to be done is then impose and output.

Love my family, love my job, and look forward to conversing with others about what we do!

Joel

Hi there!

Hi there!

I've been in Prepress for about 9 years now. I currently work for a magazine publisher who covers most of the pet consumer market. Right now I'm working with Evo ver. 4.0.6.2 and Preps using a vector pdf workflow and ultimately creating 1-bit tiffs.

I ran a print brokerage in NYC for 30+ years. Yes, it's true, I was a printing broker. Even worse than a salesperson

Client base was "high design" (read finicky pain in the ass prima donnas). The wierd thing is that I really like these folks since they push production to it's limits. Hard to make money. But we won lots of awards.

Anyway, I started a dot.com that crashed in March 2000. Then was print consultant on a dot.com that was purchased by one of the big guys. Then taught print production at Parsons for 7 years. These days I am managing partner of my consulting firm that focuses on developing new products for digital printing.
