Hi All,

I'm trying to manage a small company and technicians that tries to maintain digital continuous printers.
In the past I work in electronic document composition with DOC1/EMFE, and in the developing area.

I know some principles from computer to plate and prepress origin, as my father work all life in a newspaper, first creating the lines and news from lithos with lead then with the firsts computer (windows 3.1) with pagemaker.
So the principles and the machines I know, but of course, with no experience.

Even remember some strange machine from Agfa that produce the first computer to film (paper), the lines are typed in a "computer" (don´t remember the model) console and then after each line the machine outputs a stripe of film with the text, each page was compose manually with the foto the text and glue.

Hi everybody! i'm Amy. I am studying web design and doing freelance illustration work too. I work as a part-time graphic designer at Las Vegas printing but am hoping to expand my skill set a bit more so that I can either get a higher paying gig at the shop or score a nice job somewhere doing "Wordpress development and design". I am also hoping to get some advice on where I can get really good quality illustration prints online that don't distort the colors so that I can get my portfolio in order!

My name's Andy, I own and run a design and print studio in Fremantle, Perth, Western Australia.

I studied as a designer in Uni before slowly, falling into the print game.

I'm the head designer and printer for the shop and my wife runs the sales and books. We run a Fuji Xerox Versant digital press and an Epson 9900 Wide Format machine.

Our main work is Branding and logos as well as printed business cards, flyers, posters etc.


I've been in the print game for around 7 years now, so, still learning. . .

My friends call me Larry. I recently discovered the PrintPlanet forums and they have helped me already.
I come to printing from a different direction than most others. I started a photo lab in 1982 and we added what the photo biz refers to "digital press" (to distinguish from silver-halide printing) about 12 years ago. I didn't come from traditional printing like most, but my Dad was in Rotogravure and, later, offset printing guy when I was a kid. I used to go into work with him on Saturdays and saw both letterpress and offset production. I still remember giant process cameras and arc lamps and big acid tanks for etching. Not to mention a lead foundry in the back corner of the plant.
We currently run a Xerox Versant and quite a bit of specialty finishing equipment. We also do sublimation printing, wide format inkjet as well as traditional silver-halide media. I have worked with the Independent Photo Imagers co-op for several years, including as a board member. I find that the printing and photo industries have a lot in common, including challenges created by the internet and other modern technologies. The IPI group has an intranet forum very similar to this one that is extremely useful to me. I have found the "Framers Grumble" forums to be useful as well. Am I missing any good ones?

We started our toner printing to do captive products - cards and invitations that we design and sell locally as well as various places on the internet. Lately, we have started doing more and more commercial printing as the local quick-print shop down the street closed and referred many of their customers to us. The owner there was a friend and we had always had a very good and cooperative business relationship. He liked to do volume offset and we did small specialized digital color. We are learning more and more about commercial print but are growing apace.

If anyone is interested in learning more about photo retail stores to feed your existing production capability let me know. I think some shops that have an existing retail presence could benefit from joining the IPI co-op that I mentioned earlier.

I am assuming that you have already got the files for you LH, ENV, and BC ready . . . just take them down to a local printer that has those capabilities and open up a dialog about what you are going to be offereing and what could they offer to the "strategic partnership" if he doesn't already do banners . .. (I'd look for one that did stationary and small projects) so that you would have the opportunity for that partnership . . ..

Greetings Group,

Keith here. Started in the industry out of school around 1968 or 69. Worked various places between Southern Ontario & Vancouver, BC area, where I lived for 25 years.
Started off doing bindery/shipping. Even delivering smaller orders around the downtown on foot. Learned small offset and progressed to larger equipment. Did some production management. Film assembly (colour stripping). Realized computers were the future, so got into that (at least you got to sit down - I was getting older).
For the past 11 years I've run my own business from home in the Niagara Region of Ontario. Basically this means I sit at the computer and get fat(er). Source press work to several of the many trade shops around the Toronto area. Often deliver orders myself. This permits me to check quality and stay in personal contact with customers. I think I'm pretty close to winding down & retiring.

My names Chris Brien

I Work as digital print supervisor for one of the UK's leading large format printers.

I worked in the screen print department first Making screens from scratch, exposing on both camera and full size films, coating, developing, and finally Printing on an M&R processor II. At over 35m long it was a beast of a machine.

I Moved on to digital print and am fully qualified on

Uvistar pro 8 (2 different models)
Uvistar pro 8-W for white print.

I also operate our Dye Sublimation printer

and the Hollanders colourWash XL

I undertake various forms of maintanance on the machines including some of the more advanced maintanance tasks and certain fixes and repairs rarely if needed.

I am also responsible for the various colour management options available at the company, profiling new material settings onto the various machines.

I am also a fully qualified operator of our Caldera rip.

I specialise at highly bespoke work on obscure and awkward materials and am one of the supervisors for a team of 10 printers, helping to deliver on the customer bases stringent demands at all times.
